  • Today’s readings ought to make us squirm in our seats. We ought to be deeply uncomfortable with the consequences that come from tempered participation in the Gospel mission. Then, we ought to be roused to action. Jesus demands that those who follow the Lord do so with their whole heart. Faith demands action. Those who are not prophets will be “cast out” of God’s Kingdom (Lk 13:28).
  • Each of us are called to be prophets. Yes, prophets! We are called to speak truth to power, to “go out to all the world and tell the Good News” in the antiphon of today’s psalm. What does it look like to be a prophet today? Who are people in our pews who give their all to fight injustices? How can the rest of us follow their example through the narrow gate?
  • Isaiah offers a vision of a people of God expanded beyond Israel, to include people of every nation and language. How might a more inclusive understanding of the Body of Christ help us live out our faith in the world?

  • Paul says with conviction that he and his community are surrounded by a “great cloud of witnesses” (Heb 12:1). Our community today is surrounded by that same great cloud of witnesses, faithful people across time who strove to live holy lives. Some are canonized as saints. Others carried names and stories the greater Church will never know. No one lived perfectly – and that’s not the point. Instead, the great cloud of witnesses offers example after example of how to keep striving for holiness and growing in relationship with Christ.
  • Who is part of your great cloud of witnesses? What saints, living and dead, inspire you to love and serve? These are the shoulders on which we stand as Christians today. May their witness inspire us to “run the race that lies before us” (Heb 12:1), all the while keeping our eyes fixed on Christ.
  • Jesus did not come to “establish peace . . . but rather division” (Lk 12:51). The race we are called to run is not easy. Being a witness to Christ means standing up to injustices and speaking truth to power.

Notes from the recent Finance Council Meeting
The Finance Council met on Wednesday afternoon, and we discussed the following items. We reviewed our Financial Statements and noted that our Sunday collections are on track with what we budgeted for the first half of the year. Our income is almost keeping pace with our expenses. We noted that our power and energy costs are higher than we projected. In early September, when people have returned from their summer vacations, Fr. Doug will give an update to the parish of our Financial Situation.
We expressed our appreciation for the people who support the parish so generously and we expressed our appreciation for the people who made the Garage Sale possible and a success!
We made the followings decisions:
  1. To purchase two furnaces for the Parish Hall – scheduled for September
  2. At the present time the sump pumps in the Church drain into the sewer line. When they shut down, they draw the water out of the traps in our sinks. Sewer gas then enters the Parish Office. To stop this from happening changes to the system will allow them to empty directly outside.
  3. To contact the City of Meadow Lake regarding the sewer smell by the rectory/east side of Church
  4. To install posts and chain across the south entrance of the parking lot
  5. To explore a “Plate pick-up style Fall Supper”
  6. To ask for volunteers to clean the eave troughs on the Parish Hall as they are full of debris

May the Spirit of the Lord be upon you, blessing you and granting you peace!

Fr. Doug’s Retreat for Sisters (Mississauga, ON) – As you know I recently preached an 8-day retreat for a group of about 30 sisters from various religious communities who live and work in Southern Ontario. The theme was Prayer. I used the Gospel of St. Luke and the Synod dynamics of Listening, Participation and Mission to inform the reflections I offered. Each day had its own theme. The themes included: Welcoming, Being Shaped, Action, Personal Relationship, Suffering, Resurrection and New life and Receiving and Giving Thanks. The themes were developed in the two 45-minute daily conferences and in the extended homily that I offered during the daily mass. We had some activities in the evenings including Adoration, Taize Prayer, Reconciliation and on the last night we watched an inspirational movie. We celebrated mass every day and the sisters had the opportunity to chat with me for 30 minutes or so during the retreat. Just before the end of the retreat we celebrated the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the daily mass. The setting and the facilities were beautiful, the food was amazing, and the sisters were great examples of faith in action. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and I walked away with a sense of gratitude for what God was doing among us. A bonus was the discovery that some of the sisters had roots in Saskatchewan. 😊

  • We have an “inexhaustible treasure” waiting for us in heaven (Lk 12:33). How can we prepare our hearts today to receive such a great gift? Jesus calls his little flock – of which each of us is a member – to be ready. We can prepare by serving others with love. Give alms. Volunteer your time at a food shelf. Practice patience with your family. Even little actions help ready our hearts for God’s great coming.
  • Much is required of the person entrusted with much. How will this challenge impact your daily life this week?
  • Paul offers one definition of faith in today’s second reading when he says, “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). What does faith mean to you? Faith goes beyond any one definition and even beyond words. Faith is complex, soaked with mystery. Yet we also follow in a long lineage of faithful people like Abraham and Sarah. What commonalities might we share with our ancestors in the faith? How is our faith today different in our unique time and place?
