The Pope’s Prayer Intention for June – for migrants fleeing their homes – We pray that migrants fleeing from war or hunger, forced to undertake journeys full of danger and violence, find welcome and new opportunities in the countries that receive them.

Today’s Solemnity – Today’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ celebrates the great gift of the Eucharist that Jesus gives the disciples at the Last Supper – and gives each of us when we gather for Mass. Jesus says, “This is the blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.”

World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests June 7 – Catholics worldwide are urged to pray for Priests today on the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. The day was begun by Saint John Paul II in 2002 with the objective of having all Catholic faithful join in prayer for the sanctification of Priests. The World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests coincides with the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Scripture Insights – Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2024:  The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2023, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 226.

Exodus 24 describes the covenant with Israel, which extended the covenant made with Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 12 – 22). Whereas the Abrahamic covenant included blood only indirectly (Genesis 15:9 – 10; 17:9 – 14), in the Mosaic covenant, the blood of bulls is splashed on the altar and sprinkled on the people. The people offer bulls as “peace offerings” to God. After the destruction of the temple, Israel wrestled with how to atone for their sins and reconcile with God apart from the offering of animal sacrifices.
Both the reading from Hebrews and Mark’s Gospel account point to Christ’s Blood as true and lasting shalom. From the Blood come peace, wholeness, and a restored relationship between humanity and God. At the Last Supper, Christ is the mediator of a new covenant established by his Blood, which connects Jesus’ sacrifice to the blood of the lambs sacrificed at Passover, the remembrance of God’s redemption of Israel from slavery.

  • The imagery of sacrifice, splashed and sprinkled blood from the first reading, paints a rather striking picture about what if means to be in a covenantal relationship with God. Prefiguring the blood that pours from the side of Christ, and as metaphorical and historical foundation to understanding the Body and Blood shared at the Last Supper, we recall what it means to share blood. Think of those who share your bloodline, and the lengths you might go to protect and cherish them.
·         There is a beautiful tradition in Christian art to associate this solemnity with the image of a mother pelican. The loving pelican, specifically named in the hymn “Adoro Te,” will strike her own breast, sharing pieces of her own body and blood to feed her young. How it stirs our imagination to think of God as a mother, feeding her young through the sacrifice of her flesh!
  • Remember today those who feel unwelcome to share in the Body and Blood of Christ – divorced Catholics, LGBTQ+ Catholics, unwed mothers, those who are struggling with addiction, and all who are disenchanted with the Church. Remember that Judas, too, shared in this meal. Peter, too, though Christ knew he would deny him. This meal is not a prize for the perfect, but as Pope Francis reminds us, it is medicine for the weak. Let this shine through your message today.

The Great Commission, when Jesus sent the disciples to baptize, contains one of the first direct references to the Trinity in Scripture. Although it took the Church several hundred more years to describe fully the relationship among Father, Son, and Spirit, the truth of God’s nature as Three-in-One is seeded throughout Scripture. While the Great Commission points forward to the doctrine of the Trinity, it also gestures back to Old Testament promises.
The command to make disciples “of all nations” hints at God’s promise to bless all the nations through Abraham (Genesis 18:18; 22:18). Christ’s claim that all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to him echoes Moses’ declaration in the first reading that the God of Israel alone reigns over the heavens and earth “and that there is no other.” Now there is one, who is mysteriously not other at all, but the very same God in the flesh. The God of Israel shares authority with Christ the Son, who promises the disciples that he will be with them (fulfilling the title Emmanuel, God-with-us) until the completion of the age.

  • Today’s solemnity may be hard to glean from the Scriptures, since our first official doctrine in the Trinity did not appear until the fourth century, long after the Scriptures were written. We are reminded in this first reading of the voice of God in the fire, and the breath of God that created humankind in the creation story. Breath and fire are two very common ways to recognize the Holy Spirit’s role throughout history. Fire also brings destruction. Breath, in its absence, sure death.
·         The Spirit bears witness to our adoption as children of God. By this confirmation, we call Abba, “Father,” proclaiming that God has chosen us as heirs to the kingdom of God. Some may recall a familiar story about two brothers who ask their father which one is adopted. “I don’t remember” is his wise and loving answer. This is the type of familial love the Spirit recognizes as true.
·         For some in your congregation, the word father may be like salt in a wound. For others, the word son may be the same. Not everyone hears the sentiments of family with a warm and fuzzy feeling: do not forget them. Take comfort knowing that the Father in heaven is a perfect consolation for the absence of an earthly dad. Or perhaps, it is enough to know that the Spirit can hold us and carry us forward. Leave room for a multitude of perspectives, as the Trinity itself models.

– In May 2007, Pope Benedict XVI asked that May 24 be observed as a Day of Prayer of the Church in China. He chose this day since it is the traditional Feast of Our Lady of Help of Christians, venerated at the Shrine of Sheshan in Shanghai.         Taken from Ordo page 134

In these readings, the Holy Spirit is the actor, the subject, the doer of all the verbs. The hymn ”Veni, Sancte Spiritus” asks the Spirit to shine, fill, heal, renew, wash, bend, melt, warm, guide, and give joy. In Acts 2, the disciples are first passive recipients of the Spirit’s power; the tongues of fire were perceived by them, and they were filled. Only after the Spirit empowers them do they begin to speak. Paul declares that the Galatians are led by either the Spirit or the law. In John 15 and 16, the Spirit is the active subject of all the verbs: testify, guide, speak, glorify, take, declare. The disciples’ role? To listen and to be led.
Letting ourselves be led isn’t easy. We’re taught to forge our own paths. These readings call us to learn to be led, to become sensitive to the guiding nudges of the Spirit. This does not mean that Christians remain passive. In Acts, as in John, the disciples of Jesus are commissioned to bear witness to the Good News in their preaching, healing, and teaching. But the Spirit’s power is the source of ours.
The Spirit’s work is primary, and ours is secondary. The Christian’s job is to bear fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These virtues may not come naturally to us; some of them might take hard work. As Paul graphically says, we must crucify our sinful desires first. Pentecost teaches that the fruit of the Spirit is finally the result of the Spirit’s cultivation of the soil of our hearts rather than our striving. We prepare the soil; the Spirit grows the seed.

  • We have arrived at the final day of Easter Time! “Alleluia” has filled our hearts for fifty days now. Why fifty? In Scripture, seven often symbolizes the number of perfection. Seven days in a week, times seven weeks, gets us to forty-nine; add one to reach fifty, because God is always more than even our most perfect praise!
·         while there are options for the second reading and the Gospel today, the first reading is always proclaimed. It is a message of diversity of peoples and languages. Who is in your community? What languages and ethnicities are represented? How do we honor this representation and celebrate our unity in the midst of so much diversity?
·         Those who have received the sacrament of confirmation recently may remember well their discourse about the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. How are those gifts made manifest in our communities today? What are the gifts we still need to ask God to send us, so that together with our Advocate we might learn to love as Christ loved us?

Canada Health Day May 12 – Canada Health Day is celebrated in health care facilities and community services across the country. This day reminds us that health and healing are essential aspects of our baptismal
vocation. We are called to take responsibility for our personal health: to prevent illness and to seek a healthy lifestyle. Good health concerns the physical, emotional, social and spiritual health of our communities.

World Communications Day May 12 – Today Catholics are invited to reflect upon the media of social communication (films, radio, television, newspapers, audiovisuals) and how these influence our lives. The media can promote values that lead to a more fully human society. The Church’s ministry is twofold. The media can be used to help promote the Gospel. At the same time, as receivers of the materials presented by the media, the faithful have a duty to support and promote worthwhile presentations on media and reject those which promote values contrary to spiritual growth.          Taken from Ordo page 124

The familiar reading from the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles speaks of the coming of the Holy Spirit and Jesus’ ascent into heaven. Jesus promises that when the Spirit comes, the disciples will be his “witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Once again, our responsorial psalm proclaims God’s kingship over all the earth. On a solemnity such as this, the proclamation that “God reigns” seems most fitting.
In today’s second reading, from the Letter to the Ephesians, we hear exhortations on how to live as faithful followers of Jesus. If we are true to our call, we will be humble, gentle, patient, and loving, and we will pursue unity within the community. While the words of this letter are lovely, they are not all that easy to live.
From the Gospel of Mark, we hear a commission not unlike what we heard in our first reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ must be shared with all peoples! While this portion of Mark is believed to have been a late addition to the earlier text, it is recognized as the canonical ending of this Gospel.

  • Witnesses are key to the ministry of Jesus: both what they have seen, and how they tell about it. Storytelling is not only a way to recount historical events, but a way for us to make sense of what is happening in the midst of them. It’s a way we find ourselves wading through the feelings and circumstances to make meaning of them, and to tell the Gospel message in a way that others might understand.
·         Remember the invitation of St. Teresa of Avila: “Christ has no body but yours . . Yours are the hands . . . the feet . . . the eyes. You are his body.” As we retell the story of Christ’s ascension into heaven, we are made acutely aware of our charge: to be Christ in the world.
·         As we are charged to go into the world and proclaim the Gospel, let us never forget the central command: love one another. As we proclaim the Good News: Are we disparaging other ways of life? Are we limiting who or what God loves, and how? Evangelization and ecumenism need not be enemies.

The Pope’s Prayer Intention for May – for the formation of religious and seminarians – We pray that religious women and men, and seminarians, grow in their own vocations through their human, pastoral, spiritual and community formation, leading them to be credible witnesses to the Gospel.

May Devotion to Mary – We will pray the rosary daily (Monday – Friday) at 6:00 pm and before mass on Sundays. During this month of May, let us rediscover her maternal role in each of our lives and come to her with prayers for healing of mind, body and spirit.

Diocesan Priests Retreat – All priests will be on retreat from May 6 – May 10 at Queen’s House in Saskatoon. There will be no daily mass this week.

Pope’s Pastoral Works – May 5 – This collection provides an opportunity for Catholics to make a financial offering to assist the Holy Father for his charitable contributions to those most in need throughout the world, as well as for the support of the Holy See and its activities.
“Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion of the poor, and for enabling them to be fully a part of society. This demands that we be docile and attentive to the cry of the poor and to come to their aid.  . . .The old question always returns: ‘How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods, and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?’ (I Jn 3:17).”           Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 187           Taken from Ordo page 120

Parish Pictorial Directories – We were sent 15 extra directories. If anyone would like to purchase any of these directories please call the office. We are selling them for $10 each.

Registration for RCIA Classes – Anyone who wishes to register for RCIA in preparation for joining the Church Easter 2025 is asked to contact the office during the month of April. Classes will begin in the first week of May and will be held twice a month – dates and times to be announced before classes commence.

Our Lady of Peace Graduation Scholarship – We are hoping to present scholarships to graduates who want to pursue educational opportunities. We are asking for donations from parishioners to help fund the Scholarship. If you wish to donate to this Scholarship please indicate on your envelope or cheque “Scholarship Fund”. Graduation is at the end of May this year. Thank you in advance for your support.

We are introduced to the Gentile Cornelius. In the verses immediately preceding today’s selection, Cornelius has a vision in which he is instructed to meet Peter. Meanwhile, Peter has a vision that confounds him and that he will later understand as a sign that Gentiles who proclaim Jesus as Lord should be welcomed into this new community. Upon his first meeting with Peter, Cornelius falls before Peter’s feet. While a conversation between the two ensues, a large crowd gathers. For the first time, Peter begins to teach “that God shows no partiality” between Jew and Gentile. The Holy Spirit descended upon the believers, and the baptism of Cornelius and his household followed.
The Gospel emphasizes that the love that exists between the Father and the Son is the same love that must characterize the relationships of Jesus’ followers. This love is so foundational for Christians that we are commanded to love one another. The noun friend, which Jesus uses to describe his relationship with the disciples, is derived from the verb to love. Thus, the friendship identified in this Gospel emphasizes mutual self-giving. Such friendship is far more than a casual relationship with another person.

  • The Scripture passages from the Acts of the Apostles show how the Holy Spirit was at work in the early Church. Many times, the spirit surprises the early Christians, bestowing blessings on people who may at one time have been deemed unworthy. Today, this Spirit is still surprising us, pouring out gifts on those we may least expect. Think who those people might be today: women, young people, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community. Where are we failing to recognize those whom God has chosen?
·         Again, St. John implores: it is about love. Those who don’t know love do not know God: whom are we failing to love today? How might God’s love be shown through us, simply by extending a hand, greeting a stranger, sitting with one who mourns?
·         Notably, these passages where Jesus pours out his repeated messages of love for one another do not mention how we have earned this love, or what we did to deserve it. There is nothing we can do to deserve the kind of love that has prompted our God to lay down his life for us. We did not even choose him: he chose us. We did nothing to earn this, and yet God has found us worthy. This kind of bond should in turn prompt us to change our lives to strive to be worthy recipients, to learn to lay down our agendas for one another.
