Rick Roth – a parishioner at Our Lady of Peace who offered his gifts to the Choir, KofC, and Parish Council and to various other Ministries has moved to Wilkie, SK. We thank Rick for his contributions to the parish, his friendship and his faith and we assure him of our prayers as he deals with his declining health. May the Spirit of the Lord be upon you, blessing you and granting you peace!

Fr. Doug’s Retreat for Sisters (Mississauga, ON) – As you know I recently preached an 8-day retreat for a group of about 30 sisters from various religious communities who live and work in Southern Ontario. The theme was Prayer. I used the Gospel of St. Luke and the Synod dynamics of Listening, Participation and Mission to inform the reflections I offered. Each day had its own theme. The themes included: Welcoming, Being Shaped, Action, Personal Relationship, Suffering, Resurrection and New life and Receiving and Giving Thanks. The themes were developed in the two 45-minute daily conferences and in the extended homily that I offered during the daily mass. We had some activities in the evenings including Adoration, Taize Prayer, Reconciliation and on the last night we watched an inspirational movie. We celebrated mass every day and the sisters had the opportunity to chat with me for 30 minutes or so during the retreat. Just before the end of the retreat we celebrated the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the daily mass. The setting and the facilities were beautiful, the food was amazing, and the sisters were great examples of faith in action. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and I walked away with a sense of gratitude for what God was doing among us. A bonus was the discovery that some of the sisters had roots in Saskatchewan. 😊

The Pope’s Prayer Intention for August – For Small Businesses:  We pray for small and medium sized businesses; in the midst of economic and social crisis, may they find ways to continue operating, and serving their communities.

Our Lady of the Smile Parish, Waterhen Lake - Day of Prayer and Healing – On Saturday, August 27, from 12:00 – 8:00 pm, Indigenous and Metis Peoples from the area are invited to come to Waterhen (School Gym) for a time of prayer. Emeritus Bishop Albert Thevenot, M. Afr., Emeritus Archbishop Sylvain Lavoie, OMI and I, Fr. Doug Jeffrey, OMI will be available to pray with and for people or to just listen and visit. We will also be available to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation and/or the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. We will have some traditional practices – the lighting of the fire, smudging, drumming along with the rosary, an evening prayer, some gospel singing and other prayer rituals as the day unfolds. We will also have some snacks and refreshments and an evening meal of chili/stew and Bannock. This day is the result of our listening to the people of our community as they spoke of their needs, and it has been prepared and organized by the people of the community. Please pray for us as we gather as the Body of Christ, intent on living out our mission of love and forgiveness as shared with us in and through the Holy Spirit!

  • We have an “inexhaustible treasure” waiting for us in heaven (Lk 12:33). How can we prepare our hearts today to receive such a great gift? Jesus calls his little flock – of which each of us is a member – to be ready. We can prepare by serving others with love. Give alms. Volunteer your time at a food shelf. Practice patience with your family. Even little actions help ready our hearts for God’s great coming.
  • Much is required of the person entrusted with much. How will this challenge impact your daily life this week?
  • Paul offers one definition of faith in today’s second reading when he says, “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). What does faith mean to you? Faith goes beyond any one definition and even beyond words. Faith is complex, soaked with mystery. Yet we also follow in a long lineage of faithful people like Abraham and Sarah. What commonalities might we share with our ancestors in the faith? How is our faith today different in our unique time and place?
