  3. Father Doug will be away this Saturday, October 29 attending the Diocesan Pastoral Council meeting in Prince Albert.
  4. Saturday, November 5, Fr. Doug will be attending a Liturgical Commission meeting in Prince Albert.

Sunday Collection – October 23:  Meadow Lake $625.00    Green Lake $37.00

The Pope’s Prayer Intention for November – For children who suffer:  We pray for children who are suffering, especially those who are homeless, orphans, and victims of war; may they be guaranteed access to education and the opportunity to experience family affection.

Our Lady of Peace Take-Out Fall Supper – October 23, 2022 – Thank you to everyone who supported our Fall Supper with your donations (money, food), your organizing and coordinating, your work at the Parish Hall, your order and pick up of meals or your taking food to people who were shut in. Your kindness and generosity are so appreciated, and they make such a difference.  This year after expenses the Fall Supper raised $2,320.00 for our parish. Thank You to Everyone who Helped!

Please Pack a Shoe Box – When you pack and donate a shoe box, they are delivered to children living in war, poverty and disaster around the world. Each box is an expression of our hope, and love for these kids who probably have never received a gift. This is Christmas. If you need more information, please contact Pat and Rhys Beaulieu at 306-236-5959.  All shoe boxes must be at the church on or before November 13, 2022.

Bishop Stephen’s Visit – On November 1 we will welcome Bishop Stephen to the parishes of Green Lake and Meadow Lake. We will arrange another time for Bishop to visit Waterhen Lake. Bishop Stephen will arrive at Green Lake for a midday prayer at 11:30. Our prayer will involve some singing, some prayers, sacred scripture, and Bishop Stephen will give a reflection and then a blessing. After our prayer time we will have a lunch and an opportunity to visit with Bishop. When our visiting is complete, we will come to Meadow Lake and Bishop will have a conversation with me about my ministry and the faith communities I serve. At 6:00 we will have a sung evening prayer consisting of songs, rituals, prayers, readings, and a reflection from the Bishop. Following our prayer, we will have a potluck supper and we will have the opportunity to meet the Bishop, share with him our concerns, and then ask for his prayer and his blessing. Bishop will stay over night and then head on to other communities on November 2nd.

From the foundation of the Church, Christians gathered, and they prayed psalms and sang hymns and read scripture and brought the needs of the people before God. This format soon became known as the Liturgy of the Hours as people would do this to mark the day, sanctifying it with thanks and praise to God. Those who were able would gather eight times during the day. The Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass constitute the public prayer of the Church, the work of the people. Today in monasteries and convents, religious men and women continue to mark the day, sanctifying it with prayer. Deacons and priests have an obligation to pray the major hours of the day but are not obliged to mark all the hours. With the renewal encouraged by Vatican Council II, priests are encouraged to invite lay people to join them in praying the Liturgy of the Hours.
In the coming season of Advent, we hope to have a sung evening prayer on Sundays for those who would like to join us here at Our Lady of Peace.

All Souls Day – In preparation for All Souls Day you are invited to write in our Book of Remembrance the names of people (family and friends) who have died and you would like us to remember and pray for. The book will be placed before the altar at our liturgies. This has been a tradition here in our parishes and we would like to do it again this year.

Scripture Insights – Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2022:  The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2020, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 374.

  • Perhaps you’ve had a “small world” experience lately, like randomly connecting with a friend or running into a long-lost classmate on vacation. Coincidences can leave the world feeling pretty small sometimes. From God’s vantage point, “the whole universe is as a grain from a balance or a drop of morning dew” (Wis 11:22). That’s incredibly small! And still, God loves it all. God delights in every part of creation, no matter its size or social worth.
  • God created every person with dignity, simply because we are alive. We need not earn our dignity, and there is nothing we can do to erase our dignity in God’s eyes. How can we recognize the dignity in every person we meet this week?
  • Jesus’ encounter with Zacchaeus shows how the human outlook differs from the divine.  All the crowds can see is a sinner, but Jesus sees Zacchaeus for who he really is: a hurting person desperate to start fresh. Jesus celebrates this small moment of transformation. How can we do the same?

Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Your gifts to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal are putting faith into action, supporting programs that build up the church and help us to reach out to others in love. Together with your support, we are walking with the sick, the suffering and the dying through Pastoral Care and visiting prisoners as part of Restorative Justice. Together we are supporting parishes in forming and nurturing disciples of Jesus Christ. Through our Liturgy Office, we are bringing people of all ages to life-long faith through Evangelization and Catechesis. Thanks to your support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, Youth Ministry is empowering, training and mentoring young leaders in our parishes across the Diocese.

Your gifts to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal also support Ecumenism – dialogue with other Christian churches, Catholic Family Services in Prince Albert and North Battleford as well as other ministries of inclusion and outreach such as Indigenous Peoples’ Ministry. Thank you. Together we can do great things.

As of October 24th the diocese has received 3 pledges from Our Lady of Peace Parish for $949.00; 0 pledges from Green Lake for $0.00 and 145 pledges from the whole diocese for a total of $53,029.00 for the Bishop’s Appeal.

DIOCESAN NEWS & BEYOND

War in Ukraine
– While many of us are overwhelmed by the countless needs that are before us and are sometimes annoyed with the countless requests for money, those who are working on the front lines in the Ukraine continue to share with us their needs. Our Oblates who are working in the Ukraine are asking us for help as they struggle to help feed the countless people who come to their door seeking assistance. The devastation of the cities is visible, and the needs of the people are many. Often those who are able, have fled the cities to fight or to make a new temporary home elsewhere. At the Oblate houses in Obukhiv and Tyvriv they try to provide food and shelter for as many people as they can. If you have the resources to help them Fr. Witalij Podolan, OMI and his Oblate companions would be so grateful. Fr. Witalij shares how hard it is for them to turn people away when they run out of food. You can make a donation on-line through our Mission website: www.omilacombe.ca/mami/donations ;   E-transfer to lacombemami@sasktel.net. Call our office directly 1-866-432-6264; send a cheque payable to AMMI Lacombe Canada MAMI or bring to Parish Office. Mail to 601 Taylor Street West, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0C9.  Income tax receipts are available for all donations.

Please see the Poster at the back of the Church for further information.

  • During Lent, we are reminded to give alms in secret. Lent may be months away, but its lessons echo year round. God calls us to pray, fast, and give alms out of love and humility, not for recognition or an ego boost.
  • Do not judge others. Scripture harps on this message over and over because it’s so easy to slip: He’s lazy. She’s unreliable. We are called to encounter one another with the same mercy God heaps on us.

World Mission Sunday – October 23
At the initiative of Pope Pius XI in 1926, the second last Sunday during October became known as World Mission Sunday. Catholics throughout the world are invited to pray for and give to the missions. The collection on October 23 is organized by the Pontifical Missions Society. The funds collected assist some 1250 mission dioceses under the responsibility of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. As agreed by the Holy See and the Bishops of Canada, a portion of the Canadian contributions to this collection will continue to be used until 2020 to assist six dioceses in Northern Canada which for many years had also been under the jurisdiction of the Congregation.

Pastors and pastoral workers are invited to encourage among all the people of God a missionary spirit, to promote missionary vocations, and to collaborate spiritually and materially in the Church’s mission work, including support for all the dioceses in our country’s northern regions. On the day of the collection, an appropriate petition may be added in the Prayer of the Faithful. The Mass for the Evangelization for Peoples may be celebrated on this Sunday.

“How I long to find the right words to stir up enthusiasm for a new chapter of evangelization full of fervour, joy, generosity, courage, boundless love and attraction!  . . . . I once more invoke the Holy Spirit. I implore him to come and renew the Church, to stir and impel her to go forth boldly to evangelize all Peoples.”
Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 261         Taken from Ordo page 390

Bishop’s Annual Appeal

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal has started and the diocese needs our support.  Our Lady of Peace Parish has been asked to raise $16,118.00 and St. Jude Parish has been asked to raise $1,298.00 for this year’s Appeal. The theme of this year’s appeal is “Walking Together in Hope”. We sometimes need to remind ourselves that God has given us all the resources and we are but stewards of what we have been given. The ability of the Church to be fruitful in today’s world is dependent on the willingness of the faithful to nourish the church with our gifts through such things as the Sunday collection and the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Please give generously as you are able.

Doug will be hosting Christine Taylor (Director of Evangelization and Catechesis) and Adam Rieger (Director of Youth Ministry) at the parish rectory as they visit Deanery 6. After the 6:30 pm mass on Tuesday, Christine and Adam will visit and talk to anyone who has questions about catechesis/evangelization and Adam will visit and talk to anyone who has questions about youth ministry. Perhaps now would be a good time for us to think about a youth group for our parish. If you have ideas or would need some coaching Adam is the guy to talk to! All are welcome to these conversations.

  • The widow persists. Carrying the grief of death and injustice, the widow keeps coming back to the dishonest judge. What if grief propelled her into action? The widow was already at a low point in her life. What was there to lose by seeking justice? More important, there was everything to gain: new life and new possibilities. Seeking justice gave the widow a sense of purpose. Instead of dwelling on what was, she persists into what could be.
  • Often, people compare the judge to God in today’s Gospel. What if, instead, we considered the ways God reveals God’s self in the widow? The same God who “made heaven and earth” (Ps 121:2) also stands with the lowest, the least, and the most vulnerable. Like the widow, God will never stop calling out injustice and pursuing justice. God’s resolute spirit comes alive in this widowed woman.
  • Today’s first reading reminds us faith is never lived out alone. Moses relies on the support of Aaron and Hur to live out his prophetic calling. Who supports you in your faith journey?

Food for Thought!
“Faith must be more than a lesson that has been learned from someone or from the catechism. It must be a living and dynamic faith that has its foundation in our life experience . . . Christians, called to conversion at every stage of life, are a people who answer ‘yes’ to god’s call. Their lives are shaped by the example of Christ, who entrusted the totality of his life to the Father, even to dying on the cross and being raised from the dead. Therefore, for the sacraments to be truly life-giving, this faith needs to develop and grow. Through the action of faith, we allow our lives to be taken up in the process of God’s self-communication, and be transformed. Within the community of the church, the people of God, the body of Christ, we publicly celebrate, in faith, God’s action in our lives . . . When the community comes together to give thanks and praise to God, it should experience God’s presence.”
(Preparing for Liturgy Series / ‘Preparing the Assembly to Celebrate’ by Kim Aldi-Wanner)

Bishop’s Annual Appeal

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal will commence this weekend and the diocese needs our support. It directs the many programs and ministries that impact the lives of individuals and families, many of whom are present here at Mass. For example, the Catholic education of our children, the preparation courses for marriage, baptism, confirmation, and the education of future deacons. Our Lady of Peace Parish has been asked to raise $16,118.00 and St. Jude Parish has been asked to raise $1,298.00 for this year’s Appeal. The theme of this year’s appeal is “Walking Together in Hope”. Please support the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The Appeal is directed at enabling the Bishop, through various diocesan programs, to fulfill the mission of the Church. It is one of the many ways in which, as responsible members of God’s family, we can share in the mission of spreading the Good News.

Our Lady of Peace Take-Out Fall Supper – October 23, 2022
To ensure the health and wellbeing of our parishioners the Finance Council decided that this year our Fall Supper would be a Takeout event. We need people to donate food, to prepare food, kitchen workers and to help with clean up. Signup Sheets will be available at the back of the Church. The menu choices are as follows:

Mashed potatoes             Gravy                    Turkey/Ham                       Veggies
Cranberries                         Coleslaw/Carrot Salad                    Pie                          Squares

Spread the word. To place your order, call the parish office at (306) 236-5122 starting October 11 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm Tuesday to Friday. Payment will be collected as you pick up your meal. If there is no answer or the phone is busy, please leave a message and we will call you back. For parishioners who are homebound we will help arrange delivery to you. Enjoy the blessings of the Fall Season of Creation.

Rosary and Tea – 3:00 pm Monday-Friday throughout October – October is traditionally the month when we as Catholics make a special effort to pray the rosary every day. This year in the parish we will gather at 3:00 pm Monday to Friday to pray the rosary. Following the rosary, you are invited to stay for a cup of tea and a snack and some visiting. Let us gather to pray and to visit with one another.

World Food Day – October 16, 2022 – A World Food Day has been promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization since 1981. The Church is concerned about the issue of hunger in the world, remembering the words of the Son of Man on the last judgment of the nations, “…I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink …” (Mt 25.35)   Taken from Ordo page 38

Grace United Church Beef Supper – On October 16 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM the United Church is having a Beef Supper. All are welcome. The cost for adults is $18.00; 6 – 12 years old is $9.00 and all others is $2.00.

Tree Removal – Thanks to Terry Calvert, Chris Bencharski, Rhys Beaulieu and Ben Barker the poplars by the Parish Hall are in the process of being taken down. Their roots and their branches were encroaching on the Parish Hall and the power lines and to avoid further issues we decided that our best course of action was to take them down. It is our hope to plant some trees that pose fewer challenges to our building and power line.

Furnace Installation in Parish Hall – This past week two new furnaces were installed in the Parish Hall. Thanks to Ron’s Plumbing and Heating for their work. We can now rest easy that the Hall will be in good shape come winter. The previous furnaces which had been installed when the Hall was built were beginning to fail. Because of the water pipes the Finance Council decided that it was time to change the furnaces. Because of their age parts were hard to come by.

Thank you to all who have completed their ministry sign-up sheets – A special word of thanks to all of you who completed the Ministry Sign-Up Sheets. We have updated our parish list and we will soon have new schedules for our ministries. We will also schedule workshops to help refresh our memories regarding how we are to do the various ministries. If you are late with your sheet, please complete it and bring it in. It is never too late to help our parish!

Sacramental Preparation – If your child has not yet prepared for and celebrated the sacrament of reconciliation, please register your child by completing the registration forms now available. You will be required to take part in a parent meeting scheduled for October 13 at 6:30 pm in the church, where you will receive materials for the preparation and formation of your child. The Church reminds us that parents are the first teachers of their children and bear the responsibility for preparing their children for the celebration of the sacraments.

It is also imperative that the parents and the children physically take part in the Sunday liturgy as frequently as possible. On the one hand they belong to this faith community and on the other they will learn more about Jesus Christ and their faith by taking part in the faith life of the community.

  • Jesus shows that returning can be a sacred act in today’s Gospel. So often, we focus on the forward: plans for next weekend, extra effort for a promotion, hopes for future family life. There doesn’t seem to be much value in looking back. But the thankful leper demonstrates how the acts of returning to past events and giving thanks build a strong foundation for the present and future. Returning enables us to move forward with greater confidence and purpose, trusting that the same God who came through for us before will grace us with compassion again.
  • The leper not only faced a damaging health disease, but was deemed ritually unclean and therefore ostracized from the community. There are too many modern-day lepers who face exclusion and disrespect: people of color, immigrants, and women, just to name a few.
  • Reflect with parishioners: Do you experience exclusion like the leper? Or are you part of the “in” crowd? How could our community do a better job of giving thanks for the gifts of people of all backgrounds?

Dates to Remember – Fr. Doug and various members of the Parish/Diocese are involved in the following meetings:
October 24-27 – Fr. Doug in Saskatoon for Oblate Community/Study Days in Saskatoon
Saturday, October 29 – Meeting of the Diocesan Pastoral Council – all members of the Diocese are invited.
Tuesday, November 1 – Bishop Stephen Hero will visit Green Lake and Meadow Lake
Saturday, November 5 – Meeting of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission in Prince Albert

Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Bishop's Annual Appeal Kick-Off Concert will be held Friday, October 14th 7:30 pm at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre (142-12 St W, Prince Albert, SK). A collection will be taken in lieu of tickets. Entertainment by The Trudel Family, Brown Sisters, Marcel Trudel, Elizabeth Chamberlain, Laurent Fournier, and Megan Fournier-Mewis. Please join us for what hopes to be a great evening.  For more information, please contact Janice 960-1307. https://www.padiocese.ca/bishops-appeal

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal will commence next weekend October 16, 2022. It is time for us to do what we can to support the programs and ministries that benefit both our parish and the wider community. For example, the children’s catechetics program Finding God, youth and young adult events and retreats, and programs such as the Forming Intentional Disciples initiative. Your gift and your prayers will help make this year’s appeal a success. Our parish is asked to raise $16,118.00 this year for the appeal. Every contribution counts. We can do this if, after thoughtful consideration and prayer, every one of us gives according to our ability.

Thanksgiving

In our Christian tradition we have been encouraged to give thanks and praise to God. From the moment of our baptism we learn to give thanks and praise to God in our homes, in school, in our workplaces and for sure in our parish liturgy and in our parish activities. Our culture provides us with moments to give thanks. This weekend and this week we can practice gratitude in our words and in our actions. As we sit down with family and friends to celebrate this wonderful day let us nurture thanksgiving in our lives and in our families.

1.    I am thankful for….
2.    I notice my breath and my heartbeat for 1 minute – I give thanks for the gift of my life.
3.    I notice the earth: the air, the sun, the water, and all living things. I notice and I give thanks!
4.    I am surrounded by love – family and friends. I give thanks for those who love me.
5.    God dwells within me and I give thanks for the work God has given me to do.

  • The call Jesus puts out in today’s Gospel sounds exhausting. After a long day of labor in the field (or office or home), is Jesus really suggesting we continue working into the night, preparing food and waiting tables – and without any accolades, no less? Jesus is not trying to turn us all into workaholics. Rather, he wants us to be willing to give of ourselves freely in service of others – and to do so not because it will make others think more highly of us but because it’s the right thing to do.
  • How often do we place a lot of our self-worth in our work? Jesus reminds us today that he does not care how much money you rake in or who you beat out for a promotion. He just wants you, in your most authentic form, ready to lend a hand.
  • Today’s second reading and Gospel draw on elements of nature like fire and seeds to convey Jesus’ message. How does the natural world influence your relationship with Jesus?

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Please see the Bishop Stephen’s letter attached to the bulletin or the reference shown on Facebook.
The following information is taken from the website: https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/national-day-truth-reconciliation.html
“Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. This federal statutory holiday was created through legislative amendment made by Parliament.
Wear orange
Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.
Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”.  The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools.”
