Canada Day – July 1
– July 1 is celebrated as Canada’s birthday. Canadians should seek to be witnesses to Christ in Canada and the world, and to continue working to influence those in government to act from Christian principles and attitudes. Christians, realizing they do not have a lasting home here, should pray and work for justice and peace in Canada and throughout the world, so that all God’s people may share in the goods of this earth. God’s kingdom will come only when all people are ready to let Christ’s teaching guide and rule their lives and actions.

Congratulations – to Alison Boudreau whose name was drawn for the $500 scholarship at Carpenter and to Joshua Kirilenko whose name was drawn for the $630 scholarship from those who registered at the church office.

Fr. Uche 28th Anniversary – Fr. Uche is celebrating his 28th anniversary to the priesthood on June 29th. Fr Uche, as you mark another year as a priest, we celebrate your commitment to our spiritual well-being. May your ministry continue to flourish. Congratulations on 28 years of priesthood.

In the Gospel reading, the account of one miraculous healing interrupts another. Many details link the synagogue ruler Jairus and the unnamed woman: Twelve years is both the length of her affliction and the age of Jairus’ daughter. They both – Jairus and the woman – fall down at Jesus’ feet, and they both believe that if Jesus simply touches the unwell body it will be healed. Jesus praises the woman for her faith and exhorts Jairus not to fear but to have faith. Other details separate them: Jairus is a powerful man, an official of the synagogue, and the woman who hemorrhages is a powerless woman who likely has been excluded from the synagogue because her affliction has made her ritually unclean. By healing both, Jesus symbolically heals all of Israel (if the number twelve is meant to resonate beyond itself), from the greatest to the least. The “raising” of Jairus’ daughter also hints at the resurrection: as Wisdom reminds us, “God did not make death, not does he rejoice in the destruction of the living.”
The second reading turns to Christian communities, with their mix of Jairuses and unnamed women. Paul urges his audience toward generosity for their impoverished brothers and sisters in Jerusalem: just as they abound in all other things, shouldn’t they also abound in giving? Christ was rich but became poor so that they might become rich. Paul stops just short of instructing them to imitate this pattern fully, suggesting that their abundance could overflow enough to create equality.

  • If God is good, if God loves us, then why do we suffer? Why do we die? These are questions that humans have been asking themselves across the span of generations, and the questions that we all wrestle with today. The first reading reminds us that suffering and death are not of God, but are the result of evil in the world. Most importantly, we must remember that though we do suffer and die, God never leaves us. God is there, alongside us, suffering with us, ready to see us through.
·         Equality and generosity are major themes of the second reading. When coupled with the message of our first reading, how does our lack of generosity or effort to ensure equality participate in that envious work of evil? How might we do better, taking up that work of undying justice?
Two stories in one Gospel reading in today’s long form: both speak of faith and miraculous healing. This can be especially hard to hear for those whose desperate pleas for God’s healing were not answered. Hear these stories, and hold these expectations with love and care. Notice that God’s healing came in a way that no one believed was possible: may we, too, be open to the God of Surprises, who grieves with us in the meantime.

In Job 38, the Lord declares his power to shut the sea’s doors and still its proud waves. In Psalm 107, he raises up a windstorm so that the sailors cry to the Lord in their distress, and when he hushes the storm to a gentle breeze, the sailors rejoice and give thanks. Compare this to Mark 4, where the disciples “were filled with great awe” (more literally, they feared with a great fear) after Jesus stills their storm.
The disciples’ terror is understandable. While the waves were crashing over their boat, their Lord and master slept peacefully in the stern. This is an evocative moment, echoing both Jonah (who also slept in a boat during a storm) and the God who neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). When the disciples wake Jesus, their plaintive cry is a prayer to a God who appears to be asleep in a storm: “Do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus commands the sea to be still and then turns from rebuking the waves to gently rebuking his disciples’ lack of faith. He does not reveal his confidence that they will grow in faith. The disciples cannot yet answer the question “Who then is this?” It seems too wonderful and strange to be true that their God might have just fallen asleep in the stern of their boat. By the end of Mark’s account of the Gospel, their fear will turn to joy as they realize who has been accompanying them all this time.
The apostle Paul summarizes the remarkable truth that took the disciples a little longer to grasp: whoever is in Christ is a new creation. The whole creation, wind and waves and all, has been remade by the Incarnation and Resurrection of Christ and awaits its final glorious redemption.

  • Many of us can relate to Job: innocent, blameless, and yet still dwelling in the agony of misfortune. But God does not award or punish based on merit. God dwells with us in the midst of it all: and how fortunate are we to abide with a God who has captured the depths of chaos and wrapped it in swaddling, like a mother cares for a child? This God fears nothing, and walks with us: can our faith in that love carry us through?
·         Courage doesn’t mean “absence of fear.” In fact, the most courageous of us are doing brave things in spite of our fear. Even in our moments of greatest peril or agony, recall the God who commands even the wind and sea with authority. If this is who walks with us, how can we build faith that we will make it through the storm?
When are the times we have felt like God was asleep in the middles of our suffering? Perhaps we were angry with God, like Job. But looking back, when did we see the evidence that God was walking alongside us? How did we respond when we made it safely through? Who among us needs the evidence of God’s love in the midst of suffering today?

Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2024:  The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2023, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 240.

In Ezekiel 17:1 – 21, God tells Israel a parable about a shoot from a cedar tree and a seed that becomes a vine and then explains its meaning: while in exile in Babylon, Israel secretly sought help from Egypt, a deceitful move that provokes God’s wrath (Israel was in Babylon as God’s punishment for idolatry and unfaithfulness). But God promises to take a shoot from a cedar and plant it on Israel’s heights. In other words, Israel does not need Egypt, because God’s power will bring hone and restore Israel. The Lord brings low; the Lord lifts high.
The parable of the mustard seed borrows imagery from Ezekiel 17. There, without the assistance of humans, a tree will grow from a shoot and will become a place under which birds take shelter. In Ezekiel, the tree is a cedar, whereas in Mark, Jesus describes a mustard tree, perhaps to emphasize its humble beginnings (“the smallest of all the seeds”). From a tiny, insignificant thing, the kingdom begins. As the Apostle Paul wrote, we plant our small seeds and water them, but God is responsible for the growth (I Corinthians 3:6). The sower of the seed doesn’t even know how it grows; his only job was to scatter it on the earth.
In the second reading, we hear, “we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord.” In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul tells us that we groan, longing to be clothed with our resurrection body (5:2; cf. Romans 8:22 – 23). Mark 4 calls us back to the truth that God gives the growth even to the seeds of these bodies and someday will flower them into resurrection trees. The Lord brings low; the Lord lifts high.

  • There is a popular prayer by Thomas Merton that comes to mind upon hearing today’s second reading. From a sincere and heartfelt expression of wonderment about whether we are doing God’s will comes this line: “I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.” We are all walking by faith, not by sight. We humbly hope that our earnest desire to do God’s will will direct us in the right way – how can we nurture our humility to continue?
·         The parable of the mustard seed invites us to consider that even the tiniest idea has potential to grow big, to serve as nourishment and protection for all who come to know it. Where are the tiny seeds among your community? How can we care for the littlest ones so that they might realize their full potential?
Parables are used throughout the Gospels as a way that Christ preaches the Good News in words his followers can hear and understand, using imagery that ignites their imagination and creates a lasting impression that can be applied to a variety of situations. This may be a good time to acknowledge the work that catechists do each time they gather: they use words and images that best communicate the core message.

Today’s Genesis narrative begins the consequences of humankind’s disobedience to God. God presented his covenantal promises to all humankind through Adam: he may dwell in and nurture Eden, but he must obey the one prohibition of eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God then creates Adam’s partner. The woman was led to forsake the covenant by the cunning serpent, and Adam has participated. God now comes to spend time with creation during the breezy time of day to find humankind in shame and hiding due to their new knowledge.
That God is omniscient Creator has been established, so God’s questions about what happened must be understood as a way to allow Adam to take responsibility for his actions. Adam fails: he blames both the woman and God! The woman likewise fails and blames the serpent. As the consequences continue, we learn of the world we inhabit. Relationships with one another and with creation have been disordered by these early choices.
In Mark, Jesus’ early ministry conflicts with those who think they know him. He teaches by telling stories through metaphor to get them thinking beyond what they think they know. He is then forced to look beyond his biological family for advocates and understanding. It is living and doing the will of God that now creates family and facilitates the kingdom of God.

  • As we jump back into the numbered weeks of Ordinary Time, we hear our familiar origin story. Even young children can recite most aspects of the tale of Adam and Eve. Sometimes, hearing the moral of the story as told through the eyes of the little ones seems so simple: without cynicism or prejudice or undue blame, the answer seems clear – the pair in paradise should have obeyed God’s will. But as time marches on for us who have heard this story for decades, the line between right and wrong can seem so obscured by nuance, context, and trickery. What things make this story more complex for you?
·         Children also seem so comfortable believing in that which they do not see: in Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy. For some children, perhaps all those mystical beings live in the same realm as God – we see evidence of their existence, of their goodwill, and so we need not see them in person to believe. What helps us maintain this childlike mystery about what is to come? The things of this world that surround us are indeed “provable”, but they are also temporary. It is the kingdom of God – experienced through sign and symbol on earth – that is lasting.
  • Today’s Gospel speaks about a community divided. Perhaps you recognize this type of discord in your own families, making it nearly impossible to bring up religion or politics at the dinner table. Our polarized nation and Church knows about this division all too well: and we are weaker because of it. There is a common thread of Satan, evil, division that weaves its way through the readings today: how do we name it in our world today? What commonalities, values, and principles might we direct our energy toward, in order to better unite us?
