Canadians should seek to be witnesses to Christ in Canada and the world, and to continue working to influence those in government to act from Christian principles and attitudes. Christians, realizing they do not have a lasting home here, should pray and work for justice and peace in Canada and throughout the world, so that all God’s people may share in the goods of this earth. God’s kingdom will come only when all people are ready to let Christ’s teaching guide and rule their lives and actions. In the Gospel reading, the account of one miraculous healing interrupts another. Many details link the synagogue ruler Jairus and the unnamed woman: Twelve years is both the length of her affliction and the age of Jairus’ daughter. They both – Jairus and the woman – fall down at Jesus’ feet, and they both believe that if Jesus simply touches the unwell body it will be healed. Jesus praises the woman for her faith and exhorts Jairus not to fear but to have faith. Other details separate them: Jairus is a powerful man, an official of the synagogue, and the woman who hemorrhages is a powerless woman who likely has been excluded from the synagogue because her affliction has made her ritually unclean. By healing both, Jesus symbolically heals all of Israel (if the number twelve is meant to resonate beyond itself), from the greatest to the least. The “raising” of Jairus’ daughter also hints at the resurrection: as Wisdom reminds us, “God did not make death, not does he rejoice in the destruction of the living.” The second reading turns to Christian communities, with their mix of Jairuses and unnamed women. Paul urges his audience toward generosity for their impoverished brothers and sisters in Jerusalem: just as they abound in all other things, shouldn’t they also abound in giving? Christ was rich but became poor so that they might become rich. Paul stops just short of instructing them to imitate this pattern fully, suggesting that their abundance could overflow enough to create equality.
Two stories in one Gospel reading in today’s long form: both speak of faith and miraculous healing. This can be especially hard to hear for those whose desperate pleas for God’s healing were not answered. Hear these stories, and hold these expectations with love and care. Notice that God’s healing came in a way that no one believed was possible: may we, too, be open to the God of Surprises, who grieves with us in the meantime.

In Job 38, the Lord declares his power to shut the sea’s doors and still its proud waves. In Psalm 107, he raises up a windstorm so that the sailors cry to the Lord in their distress, and when he hushes the storm to a gentle breeze, the sailors rejoice and give thanks. Compare this to Mark 4, where the disciples “were filled with great awe” (more literally, they feared with a great fear) after Jesus stills their storm. The disciples’ terror is understandable. While the waves were crashing over their boat, their Lord and master slept peacefully in the stern. This is an evocative moment, echoing both Jonah (who also slept in a boat during a storm) and the God who neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). When the disciples wake Jesus, their plaintive cry is a prayer to a God who appears to be asleep in a storm: “Do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus commands the sea to be still and then turns from rebuking the waves to gently rebuking his disciples’ lack of faith. He does not reveal his confidence that they will grow in faith. The disciples cannot yet answer the question “Who then is this?” It seems too wonderful and strange to be true that their God might have just fallen asleep in the stern of their boat. By the end of Mark’s account of the Gospel, their fear will turn to joy as they realize who has been accompanying them all this time. The apostle Paul summarizes the remarkable truth that took the disciples a little longer to grasp: whoever is in Christ is a new creation. The whole creation, wind and waves and all, has been remade by the Incarnation and Resurrection of Christ and awaits its final glorious redemption.
When are the times we have felt like God was asleep in the middles of our suffering? Perhaps we were angry with God, like Job. But looking back, when did we see the evidence that God was walking alongside us? How did we respond when we made it safely through? Who among us needs the evidence of God’s love in the midst of suffering today? In Ezekiel 17:1 – 21, God tells Israel a parable about a shoot from a cedar tree and a seed that becomes a vine and then explains its meaning: while in exile in Babylon, Israel secretly sought help from Egypt, a deceitful move that provokes God’s wrath (Israel was in Babylon as God’s punishment for idolatry and unfaithfulness). But God promises to take a shoot from a cedar and plant it on Israel’s heights. In other words, Israel does not need Egypt, because God’s power will bring hone and restore Israel. The Lord brings low; the Lord lifts high. The parable of the mustard seed borrows imagery from Ezekiel 17. There, without the assistance of humans, a tree will grow from a shoot and will become a place under which birds take shelter. In Ezekiel, the tree is a cedar, whereas in Mark, Jesus describes a mustard tree, perhaps to emphasize its humble beginnings (“the smallest of all the seeds”). From a tiny, insignificant thing, the kingdom begins. As the Apostle Paul wrote, we plant our small seeds and water them, but God is responsible for the growth (I Corinthians 3:6). The sower of the seed doesn’t even know how it grows; his only job was to scatter it on the earth. In the second reading, we hear, “we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord.” In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul tells us that we groan, longing to be clothed with our resurrection body (5:2; cf. Romans 8:22 – 23). Mark 4 calls us back to the truth that God gives the growth even to the seeds of these bodies and someday will flower them into resurrection trees. The Lord brings low; the Lord lifts high.
Parables are used throughout the Gospels as a way that Christ preaches the Good News in words his followers can hear and understand, using imagery that ignites their imagination and creates a lasting impression that can be applied to a variety of situations. This may be a good time to acknowledge the work that catechists do each time they gather: they use words and images that best communicate the core message. Today’s Genesis narrative begins the consequences of humankind’s disobedience to God. God presented his covenantal promises to all humankind through Adam: he may dwell in and nurture Eden, but he must obey the one prohibition of eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God then creates Adam’s partner. The woman was led to forsake the covenant by the cunning serpent, and Adam has participated. God now comes to spend time with creation during the breezy time of day to find humankind in shame and hiding due to their new knowledge. That God is omniscient Creator has been established, so God’s questions about what happened must be understood as a way to allow Adam to take responsibility for his actions. Adam fails: he blames both the woman and God! The woman likewise fails and blames the serpent. As the consequences continue, we learn of the world we inhabit. Relationships with one another and with creation have been disordered by these early choices. In Mark, Jesus’ early ministry conflicts with those who think they know him. He teaches by telling stories through metaphor to get them thinking beyond what they think they know. He is then forced to look beyond his biological family for advocates and understanding. It is living and doing the will of God that now creates family and facilitates the kingdom of God.
