The Pope’s Prayer Intention for August – For Small Businesses:  We pray for small and medium sized businesses; in the midst of economic and social crisis, may they find ways to continue operating, and serving their communities.

Our Lady of the Smile Parish, Waterhen Lake - Day of Prayer and Healing – On Saturday, August 27, from 12:00 – 8:00 pm, Indigenous and Metis Peoples from the area are invited to come to Waterhen (School Gym) for a time of prayer. Emeritus Bishop Albert Thevenot, M. Afr., Emeritus Archbishop Sylvain Lavoie, OMI and I, Fr. Doug Jeffrey, OMI will be available to pray with and for people or to just listen and visit. We will also be available to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation and/or the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. We will have some traditional practices – the lighting of the fire, smudging, drumming along with the rosary, an evening prayer, some gospel singing and other prayer rituals as the day unfolds. We will also have some snacks and refreshments and an evening meal of chili/stew and Bannock. This day is the result of our listening to the people of our community as they spoke of their needs, and it has been prepared and organized by the people of the community. Please pray for us as we gather as the Body of Christ, intent on living out our mission of love and forgiveness as shared with us in and through the Holy Spirit! ****Please note that, because of this Day of Prayer there will be no Saturday evening mass at Our Lady of Peace Parish on August 27th!

  • Today’s readings ought to make us squirm in our seats. We ought to be deeply uncomfortable with the consequences that come from tempered participation in the Gospel mission. Then, we ought to be roused to action. Jesus demands that those who follow the Lord do so with their whole heart. Faith demands action. Those who are not prophets will be “cast out” of God’s Kingdom (Lk 13:28).
  • Each of us are called to be prophets. Yes, prophets! We are called to speak truth to power, to “go out to all the world and tell the Good News” in the antiphon of today’s psalm. What does it look like to be a prophet today? Who are people in our pews who give their all to fight injustices? How can the rest of us follow their example through the narrow gate?
  • Isaiah offers a vision of a people of God expanded beyond Israel, to include people of every nation and language. How might a more inclusive understanding of the Body of Christ help us live out our faith in the world?
