Today’s first reading appears near the end of chapter 9 of Acts. The opening verses of this chapter recount Saul’s request for letters of approval from temple officials. These letters would acknowledge Saul’s authority once he reached Damascus, where he intended to persecute followers of Jesus. In verse 3 of this chapter, the first of three accounts of Saul’s conversion begins. (Two other recordings of this experience are found in Acts 22: 3 – 16 and 26: 4 – 23.) Thus, it is now wonder that in today’s pericope, beginning in verse 26, we hear that the disciples were reticent to believe that Saul had become a follower of Jesus. In a few words, the text details how Barnabus intervened and how the Apostles accepted Saul as one who had seen the Lord. Immediately, Saul began to proclaim that Jesus is Lord.
The reading from the First Letter of John reminds us that love expresses itself most perfectly in action. While words are important, the lived expression of our worlds speaks a truth more strongly. Belief in Jesus is identified by our actions, our love for one another.
The Gospel of John presents us with the metaphor of the vine and the branches. Jesus identifies himself as the true vine and speaks of his relationship to the Father. Earlier texts that referred to Israel as the vine, primarily prophetic texts, quite obviously did not speak of the Father. Here, Jesus identifies his Father as the vine grower, or vine dresser, the one who carefully tends to the vine so that it will bear fruit.

  • Sometimes it’s hard to recognize when someone is on your side, on the same team. For Saul, who had met Jesus and wanted to be a part of spreading the Gospel, this meant that he was feared, and disbelieved. Have you ever felt misunderstood? What might we do when we feel deterred from belonging? How might our community be open to those we once feared?
·         On its face, it seems so simple: the command to love. Every Scripture reading seems to point us back to that one central value. And yet even our Church rubrics, leaders, and communities can make the radical love of God feel confined by language and law that seems contrary to this core belief. Where does our confidence in God, the tugging on our hearts, deem to be pulling us next?
·         Today’s Gospel about the vine and the branches reminds us that we are all connected. If we disconnect, we die. This means that sometimes we are connected to people we’d rather not be, and yet we are called to recognize that they are loved, essential, held by God, too. How might we heal the brokenness of our polarized Church and world by leaning into this truth?

The Gospel for today is a portion of the longer and very familiar discourse on the Good Shepherd. Most people reading this passage have had no experience with tending sheep, but it is important to keep in mind that this discourse is about relationship. The Jewish community would have been familiar with the images of the shepherd and the hired hand. The hired hand to whom Jesus refers is an individual (or individuals) who had no relationship with the sheep he is paid to tend. The shepherd, on the other hand, is the one who knows and tends to the sheep with tender care. When Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd,” he is not only identifying himself as the one with whom he and his sheep have a mutual relationship, but also saying that he and the Father have a mutual relationship. While using the familiar shepherd imagery of the Old Testament, Jesus expands the image of shepherd to include “other sheep that do not belong to this fold.” Jeus will lay down his life for many, not for an elite few.

  • A good shepherd knows that it is best to lead from the back, gently nudging the flock toward nourishment and keeping our of harm’s way. What patience and humility is needed to get out of the way, to put our own agendas aside when we are in a leadership role. Think of your own community: what are the ways that leaders (yourself included) get this right? Where is there room for improvement?
·         Perhaps you have heard Pope Francis’ invitation to “smell like the sheep.” Obviously, this is much less a comment on the odor of a farm animal, and much more an urging for one who loves God’s people to be in and among them, working alongside them, taking part in their daily labor. What do the sheep of your community smell like? What are their hopes and dreams? Where do they struggle, ache, grieve? What brings them joy?
·         Think about the “wolves” in our world today. Poverty, illness, inconvenience, racism, sexism, evil: what is our response when these woes come our way? Do we run? Do we look the other way while people suffer? How can we brace for these known and unknown dangers that threaten to separate and destroy our communities?

Scripture Insights – Second Sunday of Easter
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2024:  The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2023, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 168.

On this Second Sunday of Easter, the Liturgy of the word begins with a most beautiful and idealistic text from Acts. Of special significance is the description that the Jerusalem community “was of one heart and mind”, with “everything in common”. How many of us struggle daily to live for the common good!
The reading from the First Letter of John, like our responsorial psalm, invites us to reflect on the incomprehensible love of God. God’s commandments are not intended to be a burden for us; rather, they have been given to us as guides for living faith-filled lives.
While locked behind closed doors, Jesus appears to the disciples and offers them peace. Upon recognizing Jesus, the disciples rejoice. Jesus extends peace to them a second time, then bestows the Holy Spirit on them. In yet another encounter behind locked doors, Jesus appears again. This time, after extending peace to the disciples, Jesus invites Thomas to touch him and to believe in him. This scene concludes with reference to other signs that Jesus performed so that we might have life in Jesus’ name.

  • The joy of Easter Day lasts not for one day, but for fifty! And in a special way today, we acknowledge the Octave of |Easter: each day of this past week represents another day of paschal joy. Again and again, we wake each morning knowing that we have been changed by our Holy Week witnessing together. What sights and sounds linger in our memories?
·         Today’s message of peace does not protect us from the reality of the world and its warfare, not from psychological or physical pain, not from arguments or bruised feelings. It is pure gift: transcending because it offers the deep joy of salvation, which God gives and the world cannot take away. How might we see this peace among us now, in the midst of all our struggle and grief?
·         In one way, the doubting Thomas is all of us. Doubt and faith go hand in hand: true faith knows doubt well and wrestles with it throughout life’s journey. Part of the Good News is that Christ still shows us his wounds, still invites us to touch the places where the world had broken him open: in the hungry, the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalized. Where can we see the wounded Christ among us today?
