Last week’s question and answer: Where does the water for baptism come from? Ordinary water receives a special blessing either during the ceremony or at the Easter Vigil. In this blessing, the priest asks God to send the Holy Spirit upon the water so that the baptized can be born of water and the Spirit. Jesus told us that no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. See John 3:5. This week’s question: Besides killing, the fifth commandment forbids (a) deep anger (b) hatred (c) fighting (d) all of these. See next week’s bulletin for the answer. Letter from Bishop Thevenot: The recipients of the Medal of the Sacred Heart are as follows: Deanery 1 – Lorraine Tremblay (St. Mark Parish in Prince Albert); Deanery 2 – Rev Travis Myrheim (Pastor of Zenon Park, Carrot River and Arborfield); Deanery 3 - Delores Smallchild (Beardy’s & Okemasis Cree Nation); Deanery 4 – Ellen Tetreault (St. Therese de L’Enfant, Leoville); Deanery 5 – Deacon Gil Bellavance (St. Andre in North Battleford and Indigenous Ministry); Deanery 6 – Catherine Gardiner (St. Jude’s Parish, Green Lake); Bishop Thevenot’s nominations: Raymond Keller (Christopher Lake/Diocesan Finance Council) and Louise Zurowski (Sacred Heart Cathedral/Catholic Family Services). The medals will be distributed when possible to the various recipients. The Medal acknowledges the faithful generosity and service of the recipients to their parish, the Diocese and the local community. DYING HEALED WORKSHOP - On Saturday, November 21, 2020 from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 a.m., thanks to the Bishops Appeal, the Diocese will offer a workshop that will provide comprehensive education on palliative care/end of life issues and preliminary training for palliative and hospice care volunteers as well as those providing compassion and support to family at the end of life. UPDATE – WATER PROJECT – CWL/CHALICE: Part 2: PROGRESS REPORT ON BOREHOLE WATER DRILLING FOR THE FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF ST ANNE AND THE COMMUNITY SERVED Lwak is a complex of many institutions namely; Lwak Convent, Lwak Girls High School, St Elizabeth Lwak Hospital, Lwak Girls Primary School, Lwak Mixed Primary School, St Antony School of Catering, St Francis Academy, St Clare Nursery School and the villages that surround the complex. All these rely on rain harvesting and raw water from Lake Victoria. Most of these institutions are run by the Franciscan Sisters of Anne. Lwak was founded in 1958 by missionaries who came from Oudenbosch, Netherlands. The congregation’s objective was to improve the education of girls, and they settled in Lwak village. This mission has since grown from a small primary school to all the other institutions mentioned above, expanded and run by local sisters. Being in the semi-arid area of Siaya County, the area receives rainfall twice a year. The long rains are usually from March to June and short rains from September to October both of which are unreliable. As a result of a long spell of drought, the institutions and the local community face an inadequate water supply both for domestic use, personal hygiene and environmental hygiene. Rainwater harvesting is not enough for these institutions, especially with the increasing population. Most people therefore resort to fetching “raw” lake water from the highly contaminated lake or buying clean water which is expensive. When it rains, community members draw water from any stagnant water points and ponds which increases the risk of health infections. It was for these reasons that the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Anna requested support from Chalice Canada to drill a borehole which will provide clean water to ease the burden of these institutions and the surrounding community members. This will in turn free up their meager financial resources which could otherwise be used for the purchase of other basic needs like food and medicine. The project is intended to solve issues associated with water shortage and consumption of dirty waters including bilharzia, amoebiasis, cholera and typhoid which are frequent in the area. The project will also solve the long distance travelled by community to access the lake which is about 12kms away. (Stay tuned for Part 3)

Wednesday, November 4, at 6:30 pm - On Wednesday, November 4 we celebrated mass in honor of all the deceased members of the Meadow Lake Cluster. Some 30 people were remembered. Small candles were lit for each person and one large candle was lit for the members of our families and our friends who passed this year but were not members of one of the three parishes. Gathering to pray for our deceased brothers and sisters is an ancient Church practice. In praying for the deceased members of our community we are reminding ourselves of the faithfulness of God and of our care for our brothers and sisters. UPDATE ON RENOVATIONS: This week the new walls in the Chapel Hall were painted. The steps were removed, and a ramp and new steps were built. On Thursday, SaskTel came and installed a temporary line. The workshop will provide comprehensive education on palliative care/end of life issues and preliminary training for palliative and hospice care volunteers. Also suitable for those wishing to provide compassion and support to those in need, particularly at the end of life. This workshop fosters a deep and lasting awareness of the meaning and dignity of each human life and the meaning and dignity of all human suffering, especially at the end of life, when the human person is preparing for their final moments on earth. The aim is to train people both in the concepts of “Dying Healed” and to train volunteers to spend time with those who suffer, those socially isolated or those who are dying, so that they can experience the power of human presence and obtain some healing both spiritually and emotionally. The beauty of this program is that it is not complicated, and it doesn’t require advanced degrees. It requires faith in our own ability to effect change just by being who we are and giving our time to those most in need. If we don’t reach out to the suffering, who will? UPDATE – WATER PROJECT – CWL/CHALICE: Chalice has sent a progress report on the water project for which we fundraised $750 in Fall 2019. This project was designed to create an adequate, consistent water supply to the institutions and surrounding communities in the LWAK Village in West Asembo, Kenya. It was intended to reduce the spread of water borne diseases, increase the level of personal and environmental hygiene, improve small scale farming outputs through irrigation, and save time for the children who must haul water from the lake. Cost savings will occur for the hospital and households who are forced to pay for water during certain periods of the year. Chalice says, “Thank you for your generous support for the work that we do to help those in need.” Stay tuned for Part 2 on the update coming out in next weekend’s bulletin. 11/15/2020 0 Comments November 1st, 2020Our Lady of Peace Parish
