CHRISTMAS LITURGIES 2020 On December 16, Bishop Thevenot organized a Zoom Meeting, with all the priests and deacons of our Diocese to talk about how we will celebrate our liturgies during the Christmas season. Bishop Thevenot encouraged us to make sure our people gather in safety. He reaffirmed that we may welcome 30 people to each liturgical celebration. We are to continue to exercise caution when we gather. We are to sanitize and wear masks and maintain our social distance. We are to ensure that our facilities are sanitized before and after welcoming people to our celebrations. We are to avoid gathering in small groups before and after the celebration – especially in the Churches and at the Entrances of the Churches (inside and outside) and in Parking Lots. It is my desire to gather with you for prayer AND to ensure that our parishioners are kept safe as we gather. Let us help one another to do this. Please know that you can also gather with us virtually as some masses will be live streamed on Facebook. This is a good and acceptable way during Covid19 to gather and celebrate our faith at Christmas. We can welcome 30 people to each liturgy, so the first 30 people who call in to the Parish Office will be registered and admitted to the scheduled liturgy. To register for these liturgies please call the Parish Office (306) 236-5122, before 4:00 pm on December 23rd. Be sure to leave a message with your name and telephone number so that we can register you as you call! If you leave a message and do NOT hear from us that means we have reached our limit and you will NOT be admitted to the liturgy. If you cannot join us physically please join us on Facebook – Catholic Church Meadow Lake. Please note that you will still be required to register for the Sunday liturgies on December 26th and 27th! Thank-you and have a blessed Christmas! If you have already sent in your pledge for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, thank you for your generosity. The Appeal Office would like to receive all pledges on or before December 31, 2020. If you have lost or misplaced your Appeal information, please call our Parish Office. Let us pray for the success of the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Our Lady of Peace Parish – 41 pledges for $14,610.00 with a goal of $16,904.00 St. Jude’s Parish – 4 pledges received for $700.00 with a goal of $1,167. Our Lady of Peace Parish REVERSE COLLECTION – Many thanks to the people who have contributed to our Reverse Collection. If you would like to drop off non-perishable items, please do so at mass in the Parish Hall or the Church or during Office Hours or by special arrangement. It is not too late to make an offering! SaskHealth/Diocesan Covid-19 Guidelines – The number of positive cases of Covid-19 and the number of deaths from the virus continue to rise here in Saskatchewan. Most of us can now name people who have had the virus. We now have over 100 people who have died from the virus here in Saskatchewan. The latest SaskHealth Guidelines ask us to wear masks when in public, limit the size of private home gatherings and limit travel. In order to protect one another, our Church gatherings are limited to 30 people. We are asked to sanitize our hands, wear our masks (except when we receive communion), and we are to maintain appropriate social distance. We have been doing a wonderful job. Let us continue to keep one another safe by following the Provincial guidelines and by putting our sisters and brothers first. A Prayer as we Wait for a New Bishop Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for sending us your Son, Jesus Christ, to be our shepherd. We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon us during this time of discernment. We pray that the one you have chosen will respond to your call. May your Spirit give him the wisdom for this calling and the love to continue to gather Your people in faith, joy, peace and hope. We ask this prayer through your Son and Mary, mother of the Church. Amen Year of St. Joseph – 150 years ago Pope Pius IX named St. Joseph as the patron of the Universal Church. In honor of that declaration and taking into consideration our own experience at this time, Pope Francis has declared that from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021 is the year for St. Joseph. You can read firsthand the release from the Vatican announcing this year. https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2020-12/pope-francis-proclaims-year-of-st-joseph.html. I will be reflecting on the Pope’s declaration as 2021 unfolds. His letter reflects on Joseph as a model for our times in terms of dealing with life’s challenges, our children/family and our faith. Pope Francis invites us to pray the following prayer together throughout the year. Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen. What’s your Catholic IQ? Last bulletin’s question and answer: The custom of using Xmas for Christmas (a) uses an abbreviation for Christ that was used early in the Church’s history. The X, which stands for the Greek letter chi, was used along with the Greek letter rho, as an early abbreviation for the word Christ. Far from crossing Christ out of Christmas, Xmas is part of our long history! This week’s question: Before Jesus was born, Joseph and Mary needed to go to Bethlehem because (a) Caesar Augustus wanted the whole empire to register in their families’ hometowns (b) Mary wanted to visit relatives (c) Joseph wanted to visit relatives (d) an angel told them in a dream to do this. Find the answer in next week’s bulletin.

Bishop’s Appeal - Please continue to pray for the success of the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. As of December 7, 2020, parishioners have pledged $343,323.59 with 1127 donors, towards the goal of $450,000. If you have already sent in your pledge for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, thank you for your generosity. If you haven’t done so yet and are planning to, the Appeal Office would like to receive all pledges on or before December 31, 2020. If you have lost or misplaced your Appeal information, additional pledge cards are available from your Parish Office. Please continue to pray for the success of the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Our Lady of Peace Parish – 39 pledges received for $13,810.00 with a goal of $16,904. St. Jude’s Parish – 4 pledges received for $700.00 with a goal of $1,167. Our Lady of Peace Parish REVERSE COLLECTION held in our parish each Advent is ON THIS YEAR. When we gathered physically, the basket containing slips of paper with needed items was passed around and we took out a few slips of paper depending on our ability to purchase items. There are two ways you can participate this year: you can phone the parish office and Lorraine will draw the slips with the name of the items and let you know what the needs are, OR you can purchase whatever you think is helpful. In either case, please bring your items to the Church on Sunday or to the Parish Office during Office Hours. Thanks for your generosity! Thank you! The Parish Knights of Columbus have set up our nativity scene and lights in front of the Church. A special word of thanks to Wayne Bettcher, Harvey Vollman, Ray Miller and Rhys Beaulieu who set up the scene Friday morning. The nativity scene is our reminder that God is with us, that Jesus has come and will come again. Do drive by the Church and enjoy their work! SaskHealth/Diocesan Covid-19 Guidelines – The number of positive cases of Covid-19 and the number of deaths from the virus continue to rise here in Saskatchewan. Most of us can now name people who have had the virus. Some have died, some have survived but continue to experience health issues and there are some who are completely fine. The latest SaskHealth Guidelines ask us to wear masks when in public, limit the size of private home gatherings and limit travel. In order to protect one another, our Church gatherings are limited to 30 people. We are asked to sanitize our hands, wear our masks, except when we receive communion, and we are to maintain appropriate social distance. We have been doing a wonderful job. Let us continue to keep one another safe by following the Provincial guidelines and by putting our sisters and brothers first. UPDATE ON RENOVATIONS: This past week the Old Rectory/Parish Office was demolished and as I write this the hole is being filled and levelled. Viper Construction finished the interior work on the Parish Office, including the new wheelchair accessible washroom. Going forward, the two washrooms are available to whoever needs them. When you use the washroom, please be mindful of one another. Many thanks to the countless people who have made this project (the move of the Parish Office) possible. There is still some electrical work to be done in the Church Building – a rather significant amount – the connecting of the new audio/video equipment, the installation of exit lights and emergency lighting and some outside lighting. This work will take place in the coming days! Until this work is completed in the Church, we will retain our current schedule of masses. I want the workers to be able to work when they are available! Thanks for your patience and understanding. There is still some unpacking to do – mostly sensitive files re: financial records and files from the pastor’s office which must be managed by Pat, Lorraine and myself. Once we are unpacked, we will get some help to arrange and ‘beautify’ the Office so that it is a warm and inviting space for all. Again, a huge word of thanks to all who made this project possible. Christmas and Holiday Mass Schedule – I am working on our Christmas Season Mass Schedule. Because our number of positive tests continue to rise in Saskatchewan, (we are second only to Alberta in terms of infection rates), there is talk of new Sask Health policies. I think it is prudent to wait until Sask Health says something about Christmas. For sure, whatever happens, our liturgies will be live-streamed. Our primary goal is to keep people safe so that later we can gather, pray and celebrate our faith as parish communities. Sacrament of Reconciliation at Our Lady of Peace Parish – On December 16th from 5 pm until 8 pm, I will be available for individual confessions. I will stop at 6:15 for the liturgy at 6:30 and then resume hearing confessions after mass is over. I will also make myself available on Saturday, December 19th from 3 pm – 5 pm. Sacrament of Reconciliation at Our Lady of the Smile and St. Jude’s Parishes – I will arrange times after the Sunday celebration of the mass when appropriate. December 12 – National Day of Prayer in Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples: The Canadian Catholic Indigenous Council, founded by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) in 1998, proposes that the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12) be a National Day of Prayer in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples. All are invited to join their Indigenous sisters and brothers in a special way this day through prayer and acts of solidarity. As we celebrate this day let us pray within the Meadow Lake Cluster that we, all of us, might see ourselves as ambassadors of reconciliation, working towards healing the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people by nurturing respect, dialogue and understanding. As of November 30, 2020, parishioners (1,056 donors) have pledged $323,078.59 towards the Diocesan goal of $450,000. Our Lady of Peace Parish – 32 pledges received for $12,210.00 with a goal of $16,904. St. Jude’s Parish – 4 pledges received for $700.00 with a goal of $1,167. CWL Christmas hampers: Thank you to all who donated to the CWL Christmas Hampers Project. 350 pounds of non-perishable food was collected as well as monetary donations and given to the Door of Hope for those who are in need. SaskHealth/Diocesan Covid-19 Guidelines – The number of positive cases of Covid-19 and the number of deaths from the virus continue to rise. The latest SaskHealth Guidelines invite us to be even more vigilant when it comes to protecting ourselves and each other from the virus. There are new guidelines impacting the size of private home gatherings, travel and the wearing of masks. In order to protect one another, our Church gatherings are limited to 30 people. In addition, we are always to wear our masks, except when we receive communion, and we are to sanitize and maintain appropriate social distance. We have been doing a wonderful job, and I am grateful to you for that. Let us continue to keep one another safe by following the Provincial guidelines and putting our sisters and brothers first. UPDATE ON RENOVATIONS: Many things have been accomplished in terms of our move thanks to many helping hands. The Old Office is empty, although there are a few things left to be salvaged if folks are interested. The building will be demolished on Monday/Tuesday, December 7/8. There are a few little things to be done in the Parish Office: the support bars, the mirror, and the towel dispenser etc. are needed in the bathroom; a covering is needed over the electrical cables; the doors are still on order; electrical outlets need to be added and the heater installed in the porch. The new LED lights in the Office make it much easier to see. The Emergency and EXIT lighting needs to be installed in the Church and the electrical work for our Audio – Video connections. We are also changing the lights in the Sanctuary to LED. The Initial cost of these lights will be recovered through much lower electrical usage and the bulbs will last a very long time. SaskTel came and finished their work so the Internet and phone are now fully connected. I want to say a huge word of thanks to the various people who have been coming to help – the packing, the sorting, the hauling, the cleaning, the unpacking and shelving. Your contribution to the parish is much appreciated. Several folks have been praying for all of us involved in the work – and several of you have been sharing words of encouragement. Your support and affirmation are much appreciated and are a sign of our unity in Christ. We are one body with many parts! A special word of thanks to Lorraine for keeping things in the Parish Office organized and for Pat who makes sure we pay all our bills on time! Special Note – The furnace from the Parish Office has been sold to St. Jude’s Parish. Ron’s Plumbing and Heating added a Propane Kit to it and installed it. This furnace will replace the two smaller, older furnaces in the Church. The two furnaces were showing their age. Apostolic Blessings - It has been a long tradition to ask for and receive Apostolic blessings for a variety of occasions – significant birthdays or anniversaries. Previously, in the Diocese of Prince Albert, it was necessary to order such blessings through the Chancery Office. As Pastors we can continue to do this, or we can now order them directly from the Apostolic Nunciature. If you would like an Apostolic Blessing for someone, please contact the Parish Office well in advance of the important occasion you want to celebrate. Amen 100 pages of Gratitude - Celebrating the Ministry of Bishop Albert Thevenot, M. Afr. If you have not already prepared an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of gratitude you can still do so. There is a plan to hold another workshop in the Spring. Thank you to all who support the Bishop's Annual Appeal. Because of the many who generously donate, events such as this are made possible. You are invited to feed the poor and let them know that it’s Christmas time. A team of volunteers has visited door to door to find out the challenges these poor residents are facing and assess the need. As our fieldworker visited the homes, it was emotional to find many families without food. Mothers were worried over the lack of food for their children. Initially, a list of 300 families from Christian slum areas has been made to provide Christmas Hampers and warm clothes for the children.
