Scripture Insights – Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2024: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2023, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 226. Exodus 24 describes the covenant with Israel, which extended the covenant made with Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 12 – 22). Whereas the Abrahamic covenant included blood only indirectly (Genesis 15:9 – 10; 17:9 – 14), in the Mosaic covenant, the blood of bulls is splashed on the altar and sprinkled on the people. The people offer bulls as “peace offerings” to God. After the destruction of the temple, Israel wrestled with how to atone for their sins and reconcile with God apart from the offering of animal sacrifices. Both the reading from Hebrews and Mark’s Gospel account point to Christ’s Blood as true and lasting shalom. From the Blood come peace, wholeness, and a restored relationship between humanity and God. At the Last Supper, Christ is the mediator of a new covenant established by his Blood, which connects Jesus’ sacrifice to the blood of the lambs sacrificed at Passover, the remembrance of God’s redemption of Israel from slavery.
