The Pope’s Prayer Intention for June – for migrants fleeing their homes – We pray that migrants fleeing from war or hunger, forced to undertake journeys full of danger and violence, find welcome and new opportunities in the countries that receive them.

Today’s Solemnity – Today’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ celebrates the great gift of the Eucharist that Jesus gives the disciples at the Last Supper – and gives each of us when we gather for Mass. Jesus says, “This is the blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.”

World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests June 7 – Catholics worldwide are urged to pray for Priests today on the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. The day was begun by Saint John Paul II in 2002 with the objective of having all Catholic faithful join in prayer for the sanctification of Priests. The World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests coincides with the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

New Parish Secretary – The parish is beginning to look for a replacement for the parish secretary who is looking to retire. It is a part-time position, approximately 12 hours per week. For more details please contact the office.

Scripture Insights – Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2024:  The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2023, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 226.

Exodus 24 describes the covenant with Israel, which extended the covenant made with Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 12 – 22). Whereas the Abrahamic covenant included blood only indirectly (Genesis 15:9 – 10; 17:9 – 14), in the Mosaic covenant, the blood of bulls is splashed on the altar and sprinkled on the people. The people offer bulls as “peace offerings” to God. After the destruction of the temple, Israel wrestled with how to atone for their sins and reconcile with God apart from the offering of animal sacrifices.
Both the reading from Hebrews and Mark’s Gospel account point to Christ’s Blood as true and lasting shalom. From the Blood come peace, wholeness, and a restored relationship between humanity and God. At the Last Supper, Christ is the mediator of a new covenant established by his Blood, which connects Jesus’ sacrifice to the blood of the lambs sacrificed at Passover, the remembrance of God’s redemption of Israel from slavery.

  • The imagery of sacrifice, splashed and sprinkled blood from the first reading, paints a rather striking picture about what if means to be in a covenantal relationship with God. Prefiguring the blood that pours from the side of Christ, and as metaphorical and historical foundation to understanding the Body and Blood shared at the Last Supper, we recall what it means to share blood. Think of those who share your bloodline, and the lengths you might go to protect and cherish them.
·         There is a beautiful tradition in Christian art to associate this solemnity with the image of a mother pelican. The loving pelican, specifically named in the hymn “Adoro Te,” will strike her own breast, sharing pieces of her own body and blood to feed her young. How it stirs our imagination to think of God as a mother, feeding her young through the sacrifice of her flesh!
  • Remember today those who feel unwelcome to share in the Body and Blood of Christ – divorced Catholics, LGBTQ+ Catholics, unwed mothers, those who are struggling with addiction, and all who are disenchanted with the Church. Remember that Judas, too, shared in this meal. Peter, too, though Christ knew he would deny him. This meal is not a prize for the perfect, but as Pope Francis reminds us, it is medicine for the weak. Let this shine through your message today.
