Today’s Solemnity – Although God is one, God is not solitary. Each of the Divine Persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – is distinct from the others and exists eternally with them as a communion of persons in love. Baptized in the name of our Triune God, we are called to share in the divine life and to shape our families and our communities to reflect the unity and love found in the relationship among the Father, Son, and Spirit.

Today’s reading from the Book of Proverbs is a beautiful and somewhat mysterious passage in which we hear Wisdom speak of being with God at the beginning of creation. The passage is one of several texts from the Old Testament that personifies “wisdom.” Interestingly, the gender of wisdom is feminine. While a significant number of studies assert that wisdom may have represented a goddess in an early period, we know that in the Wisdom tradition of the Old Testament, “wisdom” and “folly” are often depicted as feminine figures. Since a portion of the Book of Proverbs is recognized as instruction for young men, these texts are often understood as representing the choice that must be made in life, a choice between wisdom or folly. In light of the New Testament, wisdom is associated with the Logos, the Word, who was with God in the beginning. Such an understanding is expressed most clearly in the Prologue of John’s Gospel.
While the selection from Romans emphasizes the gift of peace we have received through Jesus, the Gospel informs us that Jesus did not bring his disciples to full knowledge of who he was while he was among them. He did, however, tell them of the coming of the Spirit, a Spirit who would guide them in truth. It is the mystery of the Trinity that we ponder today.

·         There are some very common images and characteristics of God that most Catholics learn from an early age. The celebration of the Trinity can be an invitation to expand our imaginations around who God is and what God is like. The imagery of wisdom at the moment of creation playfully delighting in humanity is a good place to start.
  • The three persons of the Trinity are united in perfect harmony with one another. Through Jesus we are extended a generous invitation to enter fully into this relationship and to reflect that mutual love. Is our local faith community a reflection of Trinitarian harmony, generosity, and love? Do we extend the invitation to others, especially those who are most marginalized by the church and society?
  • Jesus refers frequently to his relationship with God as a father, and other Scripture texts represent God as mother, highlighting God’s parent-child nature. While not all adults are parents, there are a number of ways we serve as caregivers. Building healthy parent-child-type relationships is part of our nature as human beings created in God’s image, and the Holy Spirit can help lead us in the right direction.
