Scripture Insights – Ascension of the Lord
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2026: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2025, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 206.

After the resurrection, Jesus remains with his disciples for over a month, instructing them and teaching about God’s kingdom.  Just before his ascension, the disciples wonder if the time has come for that kingdom to be restored to Israel, in fulfillment of the covenant made with King David.  Jesus doesn’t answer the question; he simply tells them that knowing the seasons of God is beyond their capacity.  Then he gives them his final instructions, which take the form of assurances: they will receive power from the Holy Spirit, and they will be his witnesses throughout the whole earth.
Matthew’s Gospel records a different version of Jesus’ last instructions in what is known as the great commission: the eleven (the twelve apostles, minus Judas) are told to “make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19).  The two actions interpret one another: being a witness means to make disciples and vice versa.
Although the disciples had recently deserted Jesus after his arrest and are still filled with doubt, Jesus entrusts the mission of the Gospel to them.  He then ascends into heaven; his risen and glorified body is transported into God’s heavenly throne room (which ancient people assumed was literally up in the skies).  If we substitute Jesus’ name for God’s in the psalm, then the psalmist could be singing of Jesus’ triumphal heavenly entry: “God mounts his throne to shouts of joy” (responsorial refrain).
The apostle Paul imagines Jesus’ ascension in cosmic terms when he writes that God seated Christ “at his right hand in the heavens” (in other words, at the place of highest honor) and exalted him over “every principality, authority, power, and dominion,” in this age and the next.

  • The reading for the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord describes what some Christians call “the Great Commission.”  Before ascending into heaven, Jesus calls his disciples to him one more time and gives them a mission: evangelize the world.  This is an uncomfortable command for many modern Christians.  Maybe we are struggling to live a Christian life and feel like a hypocrite telling other people how to live or what to believe.  Or maybe we just don’t know what to say.  Where do we start?  What is there to say that hasn’t already been said a hundred times by someone more knowledgeable. Saintly, or charismatic?  What gives us the authority to presume to speak for God?
  • Jesus knows our doubts, just as he knew the unspoken doubts of his apostles during that last mountaintop meeting.  He assures us, as he assured them, that any power or authority we have comes from God through him.  Only then does he tell his apostles to make disciples all over the world, baptize in the name of the Holy Trinity, and pass on his teachings.
