Scripture Insights – Ascension of the Lord Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2026: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2025, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 206. After the resurrection, Jesus remains with his disciples for over a month, instructing them and teaching about God’s kingdom. Just before his ascension, the disciples wonder if the time has come for that kingdom to be restored to Israel, in fulfillment of the covenant made with King David. Jesus doesn’t answer the question; he simply tells them that knowing the seasons of God is beyond their capacity. Then he gives them his final instructions, which take the form of assurances: they will receive power from the Holy Spirit, and they will be his witnesses throughout the whole earth. Matthew’s Gospel records a different version of Jesus’ last instructions in what is known as the great commission: the eleven (the twelve apostles, minus Judas) are told to “make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19). The two actions interpret one another: being a witness means to make disciples and vice versa. Although the disciples had recently deserted Jesus after his arrest and are still filled with doubt, Jesus entrusts the mission of the Gospel to them. He then ascends into heaven; his risen and glorified body is transported into God’s heavenly throne room (which ancient people assumed was literally up in the skies). If we substitute Jesus’ name for God’s in the psalm, then the psalmist could be singing of Jesus’ triumphal heavenly entry: “God mounts his throne to shouts of joy” (responsorial refrain). The apostle Paul imagines Jesus’ ascension in cosmic terms when he writes that God seated Christ “at his right hand in the heavens” (in other words, at the place of highest honor) and exalted him over “every principality, authority, power, and dominion,” in this age and the next.
