Today’s Solemnity – Desiring to give his Church a perpetual means of sharing in the saving work of his paschal mystery, the Lord instituted the Eucharist as the sacrament of his abiding presence. Today’s solemnity is a moment for the church to pause and give thanks for the immense treasure of the Lord’s self-giving of his Body and Blood on the cross, made present for us under sacramental signs. World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests – June 27 – Catholics worldwide are urged to pray for Priests today on the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. The day was begun by Saint John Paul II in 2002 with the objective of having all Catholic faithful join in prayer for the sanctification of Priests. Scripture Insights – Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2025: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2024, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 242. The first reading, from the Book of Genesis, presents us with the mysterious king and priest, Melchizedek, king of Salem. While much has been written about this figure, scholars continue to study his origins and his significance. Melchizedek, who offers bread and wine to Abram and then blesses him in the name of God Most High, has come to be recognized as one who prefigures Christ. While First Corinthians offers a succinct account of the celebration of the Eucharist in the early Church, the Gospel from Luke focuses attention on the multiplication of the five loaves and two fish. The Twelve are more than ready to dismiss the five thousand men (and most likely a great number of women and children) so that they and Jesus might have something to eat. After the Twelve follow Jesus’ orders to have the people sit in groups of fifty, Jesus takes the loaves and fish, looks heavenward, blesses the food, and has the disciples distribute the food. The entire crowd was satisfied, and an abundance of leftover food was collected. This Gospel reminds us that God nourishes us abundantly. · The use of specific numbers in the Gospel points to a heightened sense of holiness in this gathering – a holiness made possible, perhaps, by the crowd’s growing realization that only Jesus could satisfy their deepest hunger and by Jesus’ desire to do so. It is often in these moments of heightened awareness of our need for God, or closeness to others who are in great need, that we experience holiness.
