Jesus shows his wounds, and the disciples rejoice to see him. They see their Lord, yet there is something unworldly about him. The risen Jesus is the same – but different! He then associates them with his God-directed mission. Jesus is the sent one of God, and he now formally sends them as promised (13:20). Their commission is guaranteed by a creative act: Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, just as the Spirit hovered over creation. They now have two tasks: forgive the sins of any who seek and bring the ongoing presence of Christ into the world.
Then we learn Thomas was not with the disciples for this encounter, and he will not accept the word of the believing community unless he physically encounters the risen Jesus. Again on a Sunday they experience Jesus’ presence, but now Thomas is there. Jesus challenges Thomas to place his finger into his wounds, asking him to stop his unbelief and become a believer. In response, Thomas makes a confession that summarizes all that faith requires. Jesus, as risen Lord, is the revelation of the presence of God among humankind. Jesus further asserts that those who believe without seeing such signs are blessed, thereby summoning us all to faith.
John preliminarily concludes in hope that the signs and wonders he shared have affirmed our belief in Jesus as Christ and son of God. This is how we will find true life in this world. The Acts reading shows the first fruits of this new life.

  • Perhaps more than any other book in the Bible, Revelation hearkens to the past, present, and future simultaneously. It speaks to a specific historical moment and to Jesus’ once-and-for-all triumph over death, to the active presence of – and ongoing need for – God’s saving action in the world, and to a future when the kingdom of God will be fully realized.
·         The image of Divine Mercy gives us some idea of how the apostles might have seen Jesus appear in the Upper room, offering peace and asking for trust. Even before his crucifixion, Jesus’ ministry was one of mercy. How much more powerful is his call to mercy after having been victimized to the point of torture and a humiliating death.
·         The resurrected Jesus holds the keys to death and the netherworld. He offers freedom to those in the deepest depths of Satan’s grasp. In our world today, we are called to be instruments in making sure that Jesus’ compassion, love, mercy, and promise of salvation reach those caught up even in the darkest depths of evil.
