In their mutual love and forbearance, in their patience in times of trial, and in their total obedience to God’s will for them, the Holy Family shows us how to live together in peace.
The Gospel offers a beautiful narrative that reflects the life of the Holy Family. The Son of God entered the human family as a helpless child, cared for by a loving family. Joseph and Mary immediately exercise their role as protectors of their child amid dire circumstances. They become refugees, escaping the tyranny of King Herod, who had ordered the death of their child. Just as the Joseph in the Old Testament went to Egypt to save his family from starvation, so Joseph in the New Testament takes his family to Egypt under God’s inspiration to save them. Once King Herod had died, God brings the Holy Family back from Egypt to safety in Nazareth. Joseph and Mary illustrate the primary role of every parent: to trust in God’s guidance as they care for and protect their child.

·         Today’s Gospel reminds us that, although holy indeed, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus experienced challenges in their life together. Fear of death forced the Holy Family to flee to Egypt from Israel. With this, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were refuges seeking safety and security at a time when Herod wanted to destroy the Christ child.
  • Two thousand years later, families around the world still flee their homelands to escape violence, poverty, and death. These immigrants and refuges are the modern-day image of the Holy Family, risking all in hopes of safety and security.
  • Do we think of the Holy Family when we see images of children fleeing persecution from the Middle East? Are we willing to see the Holy Family in our brothers and sisters who are victims of racism and violence? Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were aliens and outcasts in their flight to Egypt. We must be willing to encounter and welcome the holy families we meet today.

Christmas – So often, Christians mistakenly limit the liturgical purpose of Christmas to the celebration of Jesus’ birthday. Christmas is more than the opportunity to ruminate on the innocence of the child Jesus lying among the sheep and the cattle; it is meant to focus our attention on the wonder of God’s desire to become one with humanity and thus all of creation. The celebration of the incarnation revolves around the awesome truth that God did not simply choose to save the world from afar, but instead God wanted to experience what his creation experiences. God’s glory does not remain hidden, but in fact becomes intermingled with humanity so that our destiny is a sharing in Christ’s divinity.

When the prophet Isaiah declared that a young woman would conceive and bear a son named Emmanuel (“God is with us”), it was a sign to King Ahaz of Judah that he should resist the temptation to ally himself with Assyria. Ahaz tries to politely refuse the Lord’s offer, because he is hoping to join forces with Assyria in order to defend himself from the kings of Syria and the northern kingdom of Israel. The divine sign demonstrates that God is with Ahaz.
As a descendant of David, Jesus fulfills Israel’s centuries-long hope for a redeemer who would restore Davidic rule, even if he fulfills that hope in an unexpected way. Paul reminds the Christians in Rome that Christ’s resurrection of the dead fulfilled another prophetic promise, this one to the Gentiles, that they too would someday be adopted into God’s household. Paul sought to bring about “the obedience of faith” (Rom 1:5) among all the nations, including even the empire of Rome, the enemy and oppressor of Israel. The title “God is with us” turns out to mean that God is with all of us.

·         When we hear of Joseph’s intention to quietly divorce Mary after hearing that she was pregnant, we can be quick to assume that Joseph was embarrassed by the situation. Neighbors and friends were probably talking, and Joseph did not have easy answers to offer. A righteous man and upstanding witness of the Jewish faith, these circumstances could easily destroy Joseph’s reputation and livelihood. By quietly divorcing Mary, Joseph could retain some semblance of normalcy and pride.
  • Perhaps, though, Joseph’s plan to divorce Mary was not rooted in embarrassment. Rather, it is not unrealistic to imagine that Joseph had some reservations about being the guardian of the Son of God. Maybe Joseph doubted his abilities as a prospective husband and father and was afraid of the responsibilities, or maybe Joseph thought someone else could do a better job. Assured by the angel, however, Joseph moved past his fears and embraced Mary, Jesus, and the will of God.

Feeding the hungry, releasing those held captive, giving sight to the blind, raising up those who are bowed down: these are the marks of the kingdom because they are God’s activities. It’s easy to read them merely as spiritual metaphors, but the material and the spiritual always intertwine in Scripture. God (and Jesus) feeds those who hunger for bread and those who hunger for God.
Although Jesus’ ministry ushered in the dawning of God’s kingdom and a new end of exile for all people, we are still waiting, here in this season of Advent. James writes to his fellow Christians to tell them to be patient as they await the coming of the Lord. Be patient, he repeats. He uses as his examples the farmer and the prophet. The farmer waits patiently for months to see how her seeds will grow; the prophets waited through decades of loss and suffering before seeing the glory of the Lord arriving to save them. Indeed, the prophet Isaiah is like a farmer, for he announces the salvation of God with flowers that bloom in the desert.

·         When the disciples of John the Baptist asked Jesus, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” they probably hoped for a yes or no answer (Mt 11:3). While their question was pretty straightforward, Jesus’ response is not so easily understood. Instead, Jesus invites John’s disciples to reflect on the things that they have seen and heard.
  • On this Third Sunday of Advent, we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, a day of great rejoicing (the word Gaudete is Latin for “rejoice”). Now more than halfway through Advent we take a moment to celebrate and rejoice in what we have seen and heard. Like John’s disciples, we have experienced the incredible works of the Lord. We see and hear dozens of instances of joy, comfort, health, and well-being every day. The Lord is no longer just coming soon. The Lord is close at hand! We have many reasons to rejoice!

Isaiah imagines on that day a restoration of the harmony of the original creation before the fall: the cow and bear raising their children together as peaceable neighbors, not as predator and prey. This text from Isaiah thus looks past the first coming of Christ to his second, when God’s eternal, eschatological kingdom of peace will be established. The Isaiah text concludes with a vision of all the nations seeking out the glorious dwelling of the Davidic king, foreshadowing the inclusion of the Gentiles into God’s promises.
While Paul reassures the Christians in Rome that God has not broken his covenant with Israel, John the Baptist warns the Jewish leaders that the covenant had always required them to “produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance” (Mt 3:8), not merely to claim Abraham as their ancestor. Jesus’ baptism “with the Holy Spirit and fire” points both to Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descends in wind and fire, and to Christ’s role as the coming judge.

·         It is never easy to hear that we are wrong, especially when it means we have to do something differently. This was true for the followers of John the Baptist, as well. John told his followers to repent and change their ways in preparation for the coming of the kingdom of God. As would probably be the case today, some heard John’s proclamation and transformed their thoughts, words, and deeds. Others might have heard the proclamation and ignored the call to conversion. The power of conversion is that it cannot be forced or coerced. Conversion must be freely chosen.
  • As we continue our journey through this Advent season, how do you respond when you hear the words of John the Baptist? Do you take notice of the areas in your own life where you might need conversion? Are you aware of the ways God calls you to growth and transformation? The choice is yours as you prepare for the celebration of the Incarnation.
