World Day of Peace – January 1 – The World Day of Peace was established by Pope Paul VI in 1968 who asked that “every year, this commemoration be repeated as a hope and as a promise, at the beginning of the calendar which measures and outlines the path of human life in time, that Peace with its just and beneficent equilibrium may dominate the development of events to come.” Each year has a specific theme, chosen by the Holy Father.                                              Taken from Ordo  page 38

Today’s Feast of the Holy Family highlights the importance of family, both in imagery and in history, for understanding God’s relationship with humankind. The readings begin in First Samuel with Hannah expressing her thankfulness for god’s response to her open petition. She remains faithful to her promise and returns the gift of her child Samuel in consecration to God. Samuel, in turn, becomes one of God’s key prophetic spokespeople. Together they present a unique model of family.
Luke’s Gospel focuses on the one episode Scripture preserves of Jesus’ childhood. Jesus was drawn to those from whom he could learn and grow, though it caused concern for his family. Sometimes such hunches take us outside our boxes, as well as those of our family and our society. This may lead us to the path of finding authentic relationship with God broadening our understanding of family.

  • The Gospel accounts leave lots of room for holy imagination when it comes to Jesus’ childhood. He certainly wasn’t isolated from others, seeing as he “grew in favor before God and man.” What might their household have been like in terms of conflict resolution, communication, and hospitality? What can we learn about how to shape our own households?
·         Jesus’ three days in the temple foreshadow his passion. As events like this happen in Jesus’ life, Mary wrestles with her own understanding of her call as his mother. There are moments like this in our own lives – in parenthood, marriage, professional life, ministry in the church, working for justice – that stir our hearts in uncomfortable ways. Our task is to notice them, take them to prayer, and keep our hearts open to what God may be calling us to do.

Micah speaks God’s Word about a ruler who is both shepherd and a majestic name, bringing peace and greatness. The catch is that he will come forth from tiny Bethlehem, unexpected in every way.
The guiding hand of God, the psalmist proclaims, is always at work for the good of creation, often despite human plans. The New Testament readings further articulate God’s will to work in the world, often beyond the ken of human expectation. The passage from Hebrews puts forth the atoning sacrifice of Jesus’ body in just this manner. Keeping a ritual is not enough if it is empty of heartfelt desire for change and authenticity. This is as true today as it was in the first century. God’s gift of Jesus, Christ and Son, to the world in his person and ministry, as well as his atoning sacrifice, was far beyond what the people expected but was precisely what the world so desperately needed.
Luke’s Gospel presents the encounter between two faithful women who show themselves open to God working both in the world and in their lives in just such profoundly unexpected ways. As they come together in support of one another, they realize the depth and breadth of God’s plan and how they are called beyond both their comfort and society’s role for them.

  • God is known to use small and insignificant people and places – like Bethlehem – to play significant roles in building God’s kingdom. We can often catch ourselves judging others, and even ourselves, as unworthy or incapable for any number of reasons: too shy, too troubled, too uneducated, too emotional, too flawed, too poor, too different. Today can be a turning point to see with God’s eyes.
·         Today’s readings invite reflection on obedience, using both Jesus and Mary as examples. Obedience often carries the weight of forced, blind compliance – not what God is asking of us. Elizabeth offers a beautiful image of obedience: believing that what is spoken to us by the Lord will be fulfilled. And we have a God who speaks nothing but love. Let us be obedient and believe that love is the way.

Scripture Insights – Third Sunday of Advent
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2025: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2024, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 20.

Entering the third week of Advent, we remain in expectant preparation for the coming of the Messiah. Yet our focus shifts to joy. Indeed, this is Gaudete Sunday: the Sunday of joy! As John the Baptist continues his ministry of the good news in Luke’s Gospel, Paul expounds on his manifesto of rejoicing in the Lord in his letter to the Philippians, and the prophet Zephaniah exhorts all God’s people to shout for joy. Today’s readings exemplify how looking inside to God for guidance and outside to one another for our mission grounds us in authentic joy in this life.
Writing in the seventh century BC in Jerusalem during the reign of King Josiah, Zephaniah looks ahead to the day of the Lord and living in the kingdom of God. Once God’s people are purged of their wrongdoings and shortsighted turning away from God, they will be restored to right relationship with God, who will live in their midst as a mighty savior. Here we can find true joy, relieved of the burdens of this life, living in unmediated relationship with God. Writing to Christians in first-century Philippi, the apostle Paul reinforces that God’s peace is found in laying ourselves bare before our god in relationship with Christ Jesus. This is how we can live in the joy of our innermost selves.
The missionary activity of John the Baptist teaches us to turn this profoundly personal relationship to those we encounter in the world. Giving from our excess and holding ourselves to a strict integrity are required, even if others do not manifest this joy that radiates from our grounded center. Thus, we await in hope and, indeed, bring near the kingdom of God.

  • Charitable giving is at its height this time of year. When those who have wealth and power become fully invested in the well-being of those who do not, both materially and through relationship, we will all be able to shout together in joy over Jesus’ glad tidings to the poor.
·         Today’s Scriptures seem to work together seamlessly to affirm and build up our holiday spirit despite having been written in very different contexts and moments in time. As we strive to open our hearts more fully to Jesus in the coming year, these readings can serve as nourishment to meet him with joy.
  • Before Jesus’ arrival, the people were filled with expectation. For some, those expectations were exceeded while others were left demanding a different kind of messiah. Our own ways of responding to God might also be shaped by our expectations of how God should show up in our lives.

Scripture Insights – Second Sunday of Advent
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2025: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2024, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 12.

On this Second Sunday of Advent, Luke’s account of the Gospel introduces the adult John and his mission (in the words of the prophet Isaiah) to “prepare the way of the Lord” (3:4). His is the voice crying out in the desert, and he is the one who baptizes those coming to him in repentance and moving toward a new direction. A way of preparing for the coming of the messiah when all “shall see the salvation of God” (3:6) is presented to those who are attentive and courageous enough to reflect on their lives and their way of proceeding, in relationship both with God and with other people.
The reading from Paul encompasses his thanksgiving, a component he typically adds to the conventional Greco-Roman letter. Paul expresses his joy with the Philippians at their lived manifestation of the Good News. The timeless summons of his prayer is for everyone to strive for the good of all. Seeking to find and be our best selves includes discerning what is truly of value. This is the hard work also bidden by the psalmist and envisioned by Baruch. The restoration if God’s people after the exile is described as tears that lead to joy. The mercy and justice of God guide those in covenant with him to be accountable in what they believe and do. This is the path to authentic satisfaction.

  • We see Christmas lights and decorations on homes in our neighborhoods, offices, and stores. Although we are in Advent, decorating early is the reality of our secular expression of Christmas. In a positive way, we can look at these lights as a great symbol of the joy we feel at being “remembered by God” (Bar 5:5). This week is also a perfect time to look back on the previous year and in our families so that we can repeat with confidence the words of the psalm.
·         This liturgical year, with readings primarily from Luke, is an especially good time to reflect on the historical Jesus, as the writer of Luke places great emphasis on providing historical context for the events of Jesus’ life. This reflection can empower us in the knowledge that God’s creative movement also continues within our specific context today.
  • Last week we remembered that we can rely on God to show us the way. This week, we can place ourselves in the position of John the Baptist and ask, “God, how can I open the way for you?”
