The Pope’s Prayer Intention for December – For Christians in areas of conflict– Let us pray that Christians living in areas of war or conflict, especially in the Middle East, might be seeds of peace, reconciliation and hope.

Season of Advent – Advent has a twofold nature: It prepares us for Christmas, when we recall Christ’s first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is a season of joyful expectation. During Advent, each Sunday’s Gospel reading has a specific focus. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the Apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of this season.                                 Taken from Ordo page 13

Reverse Collection – Once again we will have the Reverse Collection. Please pick a slip or two, purchase the items and bring them to the church. The food collected will be taken to the Door of Hope just before Christmas. Thank you for your generous support of this project.

Collection Envelopes – Envelopes for 2026 will soon be available. If you would like to have a set of collection envelopes please contact the office with your name, address and phone number. Thank you.

Simbang Gabi – Simbang Gabi means “Night Mass” and is a unique practice of the Filipino culture. We will adjust our daily mass times and try to welcome a little change into our parish practice. Please note that from December 16 – 23 our daily mass schedule will be altered. Everyone is welcome to join our Simbang Gabi masses.

The 2025 Bishop’s Annual Appeal – Please support the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We sometimes need to remind ourselves that God has given us all the resources and we are but stewards of what we have been given. Our parish has been asked to raise $16,489.00 and Green Lake has been asked to raise $1885.00 for this year’s Appeal. Our Lady of Peace parishioners have made 21 pledges so far for a total of $7450.00. The diocese has 604 pledges for a total of $212,106.00.

These Advent readings revolve around two themes. The first reading and the psalm offer a vision of peace centered around Jerusalem and its temple. Three times the psalm repeats a prayer for peace within the holy city. While the psalmist describes the tribes of Israel joyfully entering the temple, the prophet Isaiah sees a vision of all the nations streaming into Zion to receive instruction, a vision of international peace, of the weapons of war melted down and reforged into tools for farming.
Jesus offers the dramatic images of one man in the field and one woman grinding flour being taken while the other man and woman are left. Both images evoke sudden judgment. Some Christians assume that the one taken is being rescued, while the one who is left will endure the tribulation of the end times, but the Gospel suggests instead that those taken away are like those swept away by the great flood of Noah’s day. Stay awake, Jesus urges, so that you might not be carried away on the day of judgment.
In Scripture, falling asleep is a metaphor both for death and for careless and self-indulgent living, living for pleasures rather than being attentive to God’s purposes. Jesus reminds his followers that they won’t know the hour or day of his return, which means they should live as if it might happen at any time. Likewise, Paul urges the Christians in Rome to live as if the day were about to break: the day of Christ’s return is at hand.

·         Jesus tells his disciples of the importance of preparing for the coming of God. However, Jesus does not capitalize on fear to promote his message, for the coming of God is not based on terror. Rather, as Christians, we wait in joyful hope for the coming of Christ. We do not prepare for the coming of God because we are afraid. Instead, we look forward to God’s presence in our lives with eager anticipation for what is to come.
  • Christian waiting is rooted in hope, and hope is the opposite of fear. Hope gives life; fear causes desolation. We do not wait for the coming of Christ in a spirit of emptiness or loneliness. As Christians, we wait for the coming of Christ with eager anticipation and deep peace, knowing the immense happiness that comes from relationship with God.

World Youth Day – November 23 – Instituted in 1985 at the conclusion of the International Year of Youth and in conjunction with Saint John Paul II’s World Youth Day gatherings, this observance has taken place on Palm Sunday. In 2020 Pope Francis transferred the date to the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.  “Young people must say to the world: It is good to follow Jesus! You bring us the joy of faith and tell us that we must live the faith always with a young heart.”  Pope Francis

About Today’s Solemnity – We end the liturgical year with the celebration of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. While our prayers on this day speak in praise of his majesty and glory, we also remember that we serve a humble king who reigns through service and self-emptying love. Today’s solemnity invites us to embrace his vision of justice and truth, that we might be transformed more and more into subjects fit for his heavenly kingdom.

In the selection from the Second Book of Samuel, we hear that David was both recognized by the people and appointed by God to be king of Israel. The responsorial psalm emphasizes the great delight that Israel had in visiting their holy city, Jerusalem, the home of both the united monarchy, established with King David, and the temple, built by the son of David, King Solomon. The song is one of tremendous delight!
Luke’s Gospel text for today’s feast invites us to consider what it means for Jesus to be king. He is on the cross. He has been crucified. While Jesus hangs there, the rulers and the soldiers sneer at him, and above his head the inscription reads, “This is the King of the Jews.” The scene is filled with irony. Those who use this title for Jesus do so to mock him. Yet all the while, we and one of the criminals know the truth. Jesus is, indeed, the King of the Jews. This is no ordinary kingship. The kingship of Jesus, the Christ, is made known not in extravagant robes and ceremonies but in the embrace and the humiliation of the cross.

·         By our baptism, we share in the royalty of Christ. Even the man crucified by his side was promised admittance to this royal line. By embracing this posture, how does our care for ourselves and others change?
  • Through his death on the cross, Jesus – whose own power surpasses that of any kingdom or government – lays bare the cruelty we are capable of. Let us embrace the kingdom of God, reject structures of cruelty, and build structures that honor universal human dignity. Let us place our faith in Jesus, our king, that all things are possible.

Luke’s eschatological discourse is the final teaching of Jesus before he enters into the Last Supper, passion, and resurrection. It seems fitting that Jesus would talk about end times so close to his death. It is also fitting that Jesus allows his followers a last chance to back out of their discipleship by revealing what might await them. The picture he paints is sobering.
The community for which Luke wrote faced arrest and persecution at the hands of the Romans, so this discourse must have spoken to them eloquently. In it Jesus warns his followers and bolsters their courage in the face of opposition. He lays out a logical progression that connects the destruction of the temple with that of the world (and so it was connected in the minds of the Jewish people). Sounding like an Old Testament prophet, Jesus speaks of chaotic events that must take place before this end, but he makes it clear that wars and rumors of wars can happen in any age and are no help in determining the exact time. Jeus is sure, however, that discipleship almost guarantees arrest, persecution, and trial, just as he suffered them. His exhortation warns disciples against following false teachers and exhorts them to trust in God’s wisdom and strength.

·         One theme in today’s readings is justice – especially social justice, which according to the conference of catholic Bishops, “implies that persons have an obligation to be active and productive participants in the life of society and that society has a duty to enable them to participate in this way” (Economic Justice for All, 71). How do we respond as a Church to our collective duty to empower universal participation in community life?
  • The apocalyptic imagery in the Gospel might evoke fear. Yet we can be reassured that the coming of God’s kingdom is anything but scary. Rather, in the words of the prophet Malachi, it is an opportunity to experience the healing rays of God’s justice.

Remembrance Day – November 11 – Canadians pause today in silence to remember those who died in war and to pray for the victims of aggression and inhumanity throughout the world. This is a day to pray for peace, to consider what we are doing as individuals, as a community and as a nation to bring God’s peace into the world. This is a day when a believing community should rededicate itself by prayer and action to the ideals Jesus gives us in the Beatitudes.

About Today’s Feast – As the cathedral church of the diocese of Rome, St. John Lateran is the mother church for all Catholics. Today’s feast celebrates not only the dedication of this ancient church, but also provides us with an opportunity to reflect5 on the role that the pope, the bishop of Rome, has in bearing witness to Christ and to preserving the unity of the Christian faithful.

The forty-eight chapters of Ezekiel are rich in imagery and complex in their message. This passage follows a description of areas of the temple and its ritual actions. Here the author describes the temple as the source of life using the imagery of a river that flows to the Dead Sea, where it brings forth new life. The language is symbolic; there are parallels to the life-giving power of God, who will deliver the Israelites from exile and give them new life.
There are two parts in today’s Gospel. In the first instance Jesus drives the moneychangers from the temple precincts. Although there was a market area near the temple, Jesus objects to this commerce encroaching on the purpose of the temple. In the second part he refers to himself as the temple, a reference that begins to cause division between himself and the religious leaders; a division that will surface many times during his public ministry.

·         The image of the first reading presents the Church as a source and conduit of life-giving water, far from an authoritarian church to be obeyed. This vision guides the universal Church, offering life-giving water to local churches who then become sources of this love and hope in their communities.
·         On this feast commemorating a church building, we are reminded that the People of God are the Church. As much as we value sacred spaces, we would do well to pause and evaluate our relationship to church buildings, which can become idols in themselves.
