Bishop’s Annual Appeal:
“Planting Seeds of Hope”
October 26 – December 31, 2025
Every gift is greatly appreciated!

About Today’s Commemoration – On this day, we pray for those who have died but have not yet fully entered the heavenly kingdom. Although assured of their salvation, they must first pass through a stage of purification – one that is beyond the realm of temporal time – aided by our prayers. Our love for one another continues beyond death, and we are united with one another in the hope of eternal life with Christ.

Saskatchewan Provincial Knights of Columbus Charity Appeal draw with banquet and dance will be Saturday, November 8 in our hall. The evening will start with mass  at  5:00 followed by the  banquet and dance. Also calling on all parishioners who can help pull apart tickets on Friday, November 7 evening starting at 7:00 pm, many hands make light work.  Please come and help if you can.  Any questions or to get tickets for the banquet call Chris Bencharski at 306.240.8872.

Christmas Shoebox – The main reason to pack a shoebox is to ensure that children from the poorest families of the world know that someone cares, which is demonstrated by receiving a shoebox that is filled with toys, school supplies and personal care items.  Shoeboxes can be picked up at the back of the church, more have been ordered, also an ordinary shoebox can be used.  All shoeboxes must be at the church before or on November 16.  For gift suggestions and information google, SamaritansPurse.ca/OCC.

Today’s Scriptures speak of our eternal destiny as rest. The Greek noun anapausis (see Ps 23:3; Mt11:29) and its related verb anapauo (see Mt 11:28) mean “rest” and “repose”, but also “refreshment”, “revival “. Yet another image of revival and transformation occurs in today’s first reading. In verse 7, the souls of the just are said to shine and be like sparks. Similar imagery is  found in Daniel 12:3, where “those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake” and the righteous will shine like stars. In Daniel 8:10, the stars are angelic beings. Daniel and the author of the Book of Wisdom believe that after death the just will be transformed into angelic beings. This same view is expressed by Jesus in the Gospel accounts.

·         Which mother grieves more, the mother whose son is shot and killed, or the one whose son pulled the trigger? Both are looked upon by Jesus with eyes of mercy and love. May we also do the same, grieving together and holding tight to the hope of the resurrection.
·         When Scripture speaks of justice and “the just,” its meaning is best described as right relationship. We honor those who have gone before us when we make peace with them and learn from their examples in our relationships with others.

The Scriptures focus our attention on prayer. The first reading, from the Book of Sirach, and the responsorial psalm remind us that God hears the cry of the oppressed, the orphan, the widow, the lowly, and the poor. This does not mean that God does not listen to the prayer of all people, but God is especially attentive to people in great need, people who know that they rely on God for their very existence.
The parable in today’s Gospel presents us with two contrasting figures, a Pharisee and a tax collector. Members of the Pharisaic sect identified themselves as strict observers of the law, while tax collectors were understood as individuals who collaborated with the Roman establishment. The Pharisee in this parable thanks God that he is not like other people, particularly those whom he would consider “lowlifes”. Meanwhile, the tax collector realizes that he is a sinner and pleads for God’s mercy. Which prayer is more sincere?

·         In our daily examen or night prayer, which voice do we resemble? Is it the Pharisee or the tax collector from today’s Gospel, or perhaps St. Paul in the second reading? On a daily basis we can evaluate how our awareness of our own brokenness has opened the doors to act on behalf of solidarity and justice.
·         Jesus promises a just response to our petitions.  By presenting our prayers within the context of community, we can better ensure that our requests align with God’s vision of justice: that all humanity be reconciled in right relationship with each other and with God.
·         The verse before the Gospel reminds us to utilize words from Scripture in our prayer.  In this way we keep our desires and hope fixed on God, and in our faith we will find rest.

World Mission Sunday – At the initiative of Pope Pius XI in 1926, the second last Sunday during October became known as World Mission Sunday. Catholics throughout the world are invited to pray for and give to the missions. The collection this Sunday is organized by the Pontifical Missions Society. The funds collected assist some 1250 mission dioceses under the responsibility of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Pastors and pastoral workers are invited to encourage among all the people of God a missionary spirit, to promote missionary vocations, and to collaborate spiritually and materially in the church’s mission work, including support for all the dioceses in our country’s northern regions.

The Gospel text for today is unique to Luke a parable often identified as that of “the unjust judge” of “the persistent widow.” What an engaging parable!  Preachers, frequently focus on the character of the judge and, therefore, listeners are inclined to associate the judge with God.  Listeners might conclude that their own prayer is not strong enough and that perhaps, if they just prayed harder or more often, God would answer their prayer as they want it answered.  But we must ask:  Is this how God acts?  Is this how God listens to prayer?  Does God count how frequently we pray?
Another way of looking at this parable is to focus on the character of the widow.  Biblical scholar Barbara Reid has called the woman “an icon for what it means to do the work of justice.”  The unnamed widow in this story repeatedly approaches the unjust judge.  She is persistent in her demand for justice.  Why is this text often presented as the widow badgering the judge?  This widow is requesting (according to the Greek text, “over and over”) justice.

·         The persistence needed to constantly turn toward God with faith is best achieved in community.  Even the widow’s pleading was a public spectacle.  We can each strengthen our faith by leaning on each other instead of trying to carry our burdens ourselves.
