The apostles’ request for an increase in faith may be a response to what Jesus had said in the verses immediately prior to what we hear today.  In those verses, Jesus instructs his followers about forgiveness.  If someone sins against them seven times in one day, they are to forgive that person seven times.  Perhaps the apostles requested an increase in faith so that they could forgive in the manner in which Jesus instructed them to forgive.  In addition to recognizing that Jesus uses hyperbole, it is helpful to know that the Greek construction of Jesus’ words indicates that the faith of the apostles is already capable of doing great deeds.
The second portion of the Gospel text can be very difficult for faithful women and men of the twenty-first century to understand.  At the time of Jesus, it was not unusual for someone to have a servant.  Within the Scriptures, the connotation of “servant” is not always understood negatively.  While the role of the servant in today’s Gospel may strike a negative chord in us, it is helpful to keep in mind that both Jesus and his mother Mary, along with many other persons in the Bible, are referred to as servants of God.

·         In today’s world, it’s not difficult to relate to Habakkuk’s 600 BC complaint: why does God not intervene to relieve suffering, to stop evil in its tracks?  God’s response reminds us that evil will not have the final word.  We know that Jesus’ resurrection already conquered death; this knowledge gives us resolve to continue being bearers of peace, consolation, and hope.
  • Baptized, confirmed, and ordained Catholics will be familiar with the sign of the imposition of hands.  While the effects of these signs are real, they are still points along a journey of our growth in faith.  St. Paul urges us to “stir into flame” the faith that sometimes diminishes to smoldering ember (2 Tm 1:6).
  • While injustice and suffering exist, we are called as servants to remain faithful – not to turn away from the work of building God’s kingdom, but to embrace it.

The author of Numbers records the grumbling of the Israelites who experience hunger and thirst on their journey out of Egypt.  A plague of snakes is their punishment, and they beg Moses to speak to the Lord on their behalf.  The Lord instructs Moses to make a bronze serpent and place it on a pole; all who look at it will live.
The second reading offers a succinct and profound Christology from the early Church.  Christ is presented as both human in appearance and divine in his mission.  He is the one who empties himself – in other words, gives all that he is – in obedience to the Father.  This faithful obedience leads to his death on the cross.  His death on the cross leads to his exaltation by the Father and the salvation of every one who confesses Jesus Christ as Lord.
The Gospel text weaves together the threads in the first two readings as Jesus speaks about himself as Son of Man.  Jesus places his life, and by implication his impending passion and death, in the context of the Father’s love for the whole world.

·         In Jesus’ time, the cross was a barbaric instrument of torture.  Yet it has been transformed into the ultimate symbol of hope springing from Jesus’ victory over death.  The cross serves as a never-ending source of hope for us today in the face of so many seemingly hopeless situations of violence, separation, and injustice.
  • We continue to witness Christ crucified in the world through various mechanisms of oppression and torture – perhaps none more salient than the lynching of African Americans in the United States as recently as the 1960’s.  James Cone challenges Christians to see how “the cross placed alongside the lynching tree can help us to see Jesus in America in a new light, and thereby empower people who claim to follow him to take a stand against white supremacy and every kind of injustice” (The Cross and the Lynching Tree, pg. xix).

Today’s Gospel reading from Luke, like last Sunday’s Gospel, draws our attention to discipleship. While last week’s text took place at a table, the setting of today’s passage is quite different. Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, where he will be crucified. Crowds followed Jesus as he made his way to his death and resurrection.
Jesus’ words to the people seem shocking. Does Jesus really want us to hate our parents, our spouse, our siblings? Is this what it takes to be a disciple? Doesn’t this contradict Jesus’ teaching on love? Aren’t disciples supposed to love one another, even those who hate us? Three times in this text, we hear that unless a person does or does not do something that person “cannot be my disciple” (14:26, 27, 33). In essence, Jesus states that we must hate our family, carry our cross, and renounce our possessions. The text could be understood as stating, “Whoever prefers family over me, cannot be my disciple.” Again, to be a disciple of Jesus means be ready to follow him without compromise.

·         Venerable Augustus Tolton, the first African American Catholic priest, whose own birth certificate identifies him only as “a child, property of . . . “ found a space of inclusion within a Church with a painful history of justifying and participating in slavery. He claimed before the Black Catholic Conference in 1889: “The Catholic Church deplores a double slavery – that of the mind and that of the body . . . .She is the Church for our people.” May we continue the work to fully realize this vision.
  • Jesus uses King Herod’s notoriety in this parable – a king known to go to extremes to build up and protect his power and status. To what extent are we willing to go to secure our own position within our family and community? To what extreme is a nation willing to sacrifice charity and justice in the name of security and military might? To choose the way of humility and love defies logic – it is a path that can only make sense with the light of the Holy Spirit.
