World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation – September 1 - In 2015, Pope Francis declared September 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. Coinciding with a celebration instituted by the Orthodox Church, it is also a day of ecumenical prayer and unity. Gatherings for prayer are encouraged in parishes. The faithful should also be encouraged to take practical initiatives to combat earth’s environmental crisis. The reading from Sirach offers us teachings from the Wisdom tradition. The biblical texts identified as “Wisdom” tend to focus on how to live well. Much, if not most< of this material offers instruction. Today’s selection from Sirach is a cutting from a larger unit that focuses on the importance of the virtue of humility, a virtue of no less value today than it was at the time this text was composed. Hebrews refers to two mountain scenes or experiences. The first reference is to Mount Sinai, the holy mountain where God was made manifest and entered into a covenant relationship with Israel; the second reference is to Mount Zion and the temple. This latter scene, however, should not be understood as the earthly Jerusalem but as the heavenly Jerusalem, where covenantal promises will be fulfilled. Luke’s Gospel for today offers much for reflection. While Jesus accepted an invitation “to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,” we should not miss the rest of this verse that states, “and the people there were observing him” (14:1). The verb used here can imply that the Pharisees were waiting for Jesus to do something with which they could find fault. What will Jesus do? What will he say? Jesus tells a parable. This parable is about a banquet and where people position themselves. Do they select a place of honor? Or do they humbly take a place farther from the host, grateful for having been invited to this meal? Jesus then addresses the Pharisee, the host of the dinner. These words are also addressed to us. They confront us with the lavish love of our God. All are welcome at God’s banquet. · Today’s Gospel parable provides a social interpretation of humility. Humility is not simply a personal trait, but is intimately linked to how we hold ourselves in relation to others, as the guests at the banquet.

Our readings from Isaiah and Luke focus on the theme of salvation. Is God’s saving love offered to only a few? To only the Jews? To a select community? To everyone? According to the closing chapter in the Book of Isaiah, the Lord announces: “I know their works and their thoughts, and I come to gather nations of every language; they shall come and see my glory” (66:18). The text proceeds to make clear that many foreigners will be welcomed on God’s holy mountain. This theme of a universal invitation from our saving God is not unusual in this magnificent prophetic book. “Go out to all the world and tell the Good News,” from the closing verses of the Gospel of Mark (16:15), is the refrain for the responsorial psalm from Psalm 117. The psalm, the shortest in the psalter, is itself universal in nature, inviting all nations and all peoples to offer praise to God. The Gospel passage from Luke invites us to reflect more closely on the message of Jesus as he makes his way to Jerusalem. In a manner not uncommon in Luke, a question is raised. Whose question is this? Is it really from an unknown individual or do many wonder, “Lord, will only a few people be saved” (13:23)? Who will be saved? How will that be determined? Jesus does not give a clear response to the question. · Hard times, and even daily life, can make us weary – with “drooping hands and weak knees” (Heb 12:12). The balm for our fatigue is drawing close to God and allowing God to speak to the depths of our soul, guiding us to double down on our practice of love and mercy.

Our reading from Jeremiah reminds us that this prophet suffered greatly. The people of Judah did not welcome the words that God commanded Jeremiah to proclaim. The action of the officials who lowered Jeremiah into the cistern was a direct result of their hatred of Jeremiah and his message. During this time, Jeremiah had told the authorities that they should surrender to the Babylonians. This was an unpopular message for a people who would have seen surrender as an act of treason. Yet another court official, a foreigner, Ebedmelech, whose name means “servant of the king,” convinces the king that Jeremiah should be saved. The psalm has been classified as a combination of a prayer of thanksgiving and a lament. Since a psalm of thanksgiving tells the story of a past difficulty, we can clearly hear the story of either the psalmist or Jeremiah in this text. Our Gospel of five verses is a difficult one. Jesus’ statement that he has come to bring fire upon the earth might best be understood as some type of purification that needs to take place. And the baptism that Jesus proclaims refers to the death that he will soon face. Most of us are likely to prefer the image of a gentle, tender, and caring Jesus to the one presented to us today. The reality, however, is that to be a follower of Jesus means that we must make many difficult choices, choices that will not always be popular with friends and family. · Baptism is a rebirth, a cleansing. Baptism by fire might look like death at first, but then it proves to bring forth new, abundant life. What “baptism by fire” moments have you experienced in your own life? What situations of injustice, oppression, and structural sin are yearning for rebirth and cleansing in our world today?

Scripture Insights – Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2025: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2024, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 290. The readings for today invite us to trust in God’s ways. The author of the Book of Wisdom reminds us of the faith of our early ancestors, who had been enslaved in Egypt yet trusted that God would lead them to freedom. In the Letter to the Hebrews, we hear how Abraham, a still earlier ancestor, placed his life in the hands of God, trusting that God would lead him to a new land, where he would become the ancestor of countless believers. Those who claim Abraham as an ancestor in faith include Jews, Muslims, and Christians. The extensive passage in the reading from the Gospel of Luke can be divided into several parts. In the opening verses, Jesus instructs his disciples about possessions, about being prepared or watchful for the Lord’s return, and about responsible leadership. It can be helpful to keep in mind that this instruction takes place while Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem. The first instruction is quite clear. While it was not likely to have been taken literally (to sell everything one has is hardly realistic), it emphasizes that the disciples should not be attached to possessions. The second instruction stresses the importance of being prepared for the Lord’s return whenever that will be. Finally, the third instruction offers the disciples a warning about how to use or not use the authority that they have been given. Positions of privilege can lure people to take advantage of others. Such is not the behavior of a disciple of Jesus. · To live with faith does not mean to have all the answers or to be flawless. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross offers great words for living with faith: “And when night comes, and you look back over the day and see how fragmentary everything has been, and how much you planned that has gone undone, and all the reasons you have to be embarrassed and ashamed: just take everything exactly as it is, put it in God’s hands and leave it with him.”

Today’s first reading from Ecclesiastes introduces us to the skeptic of the Old Testament. The preacher, or teacher, who speaks in this book is a man who comes across as having seen it all and tried it all. He is an individual whose instruction might leave us wondering, “So now what?” The Gospel reading paraphrases Ecclesiastes 8:15 (“Therefore I praised joy, because there is nothing better for mortals under the sun than to eat and to drink and to be joyful”) when the landowner says to himself, “you have so many good things stored up for many years; rest, eat, drink, be merry!” (Lk 12:19). Luke’s Gospel passage for today is a reminder that human beings can be very petty. The man who comes to Jesus through the crowd is upset because of a legal dispute with his brother. Jesus responds by telling the man a parable that demonstrates how ridiculous it is to hoard what one has received. · How can we tell when we are missing the mark on our attachment to material possessions? The Catechism of the Catholic Church identifies the purposes of private property to include guaranteeing safety, freedom, and dignity and meeting our family’s basic needs in a way that “allows for a natural solidarity to develop” within a community. Let us ask: Do our homes and possessions promote solidarity with our local and global community, or do they foster competition, envy, exploitation, and isolation?
