The Pope’s Prayer Intention for July – For formation in discernment – Let us pray that we might again learn how to discern, to know how to choose paths of life and reject everything that leads us away from Christ and the Gospel.

Please remember in your prayers
Eileen Jeancart who passed away recently. Her funeral will be held Monday, July 7 at 2:00 pm in Our Lady of Peace Church.

Canada Day – July 1 – July 1 is celebrated as Canada’s birthday. Canadians should seek to be witnesses to Christ in Canada and the world, and to continue working to influence those in government to act from Christian principles and attitudes. Christians, realizing they do not have a lasting home here, should pray and work for justice and peace in Canada and throughout the world, so that all God’s people may share in the goods of this earth. God’s kingdom will come only when all people are ready to let Christ’s teaching guide and rule their lives and actions.

About Today’s Saints – Paul comes to faith through a dramatic conversion, falling to the ground on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians. Peter comes to faith slowly and steadily, sometimes with two steps forward and one back. He is the one who denies the Lord three times, then confesses his faith thrice. Regarding their complementary missions, Peter is the apostle of the Jewish Christians, while Paul is the apostle to the Gentile Christians.

Charity BBQ – The Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring the barbecue on July 4th at Home Hardware. The proceeds will go to Coats for Kids. Please come out and support us. Thank you.

Pilgrimages – The diocese is encouraging the faithful to attend at least one pilgrimage during this Jubilee Year. Our Lady of Lourdes (St. Laurent) in Duck Lake has three opportunities this year – July 15/16, August 15 and September 8. Please plan to attend if possible. Information on other pilgrimages can be found on posters at the back of the church.

Herod Agrippa, the grandson of Herod the Great, has Peter arrested and condemned to death for proclaiming faith in Jesus as Messiah and Lord. There are many similarities here between Jesus’ condemnation and Peter’s. As the community prays for Peter, an angel of the Lord miraculously rescues him from prison. Peter thinks it a vision. Once he realizes its reality, he acknowledges that the Lord is directing not only the events of his life but also those of the entire people of God. In faith, we too trust that the Lord is present and engaged in our daily living, directing and guiding us through the Spirit, into deeper relationships with one another and with God.
In the Gospel, at Caesarea Philippi, Peter declares Jesus to be the Messiah. This affirmation, a gift of faith from God to Peter, leads Jesus to establish Peter as the rock upon which Jesus will build his Church, here understood not as a building but as an assembly of believers. In other words, Peter is to lead others as they strive to be faithful disciples. Jesus establishes Peter’s leadership in the community, and asserts that the powers of evil will never overwhelm them. Along with the other readings, we believe that God directs, guides, and sustains the community of believers as we strive to live as the Lord’s faithful disciples.

·         These two saints represent the dual importance of the universal and local Church. Through the universal Church we experience global unity. Through the local Church we find unique cultural expressions of the Holy Spirit’s movement in the world. Both offer a sense of belonging and a commissioning to interact with the world in light of our faith.
  • Both Peter and Paul stretch our limits of mercy and vocation, both of which are offered to each and every one of us. God extends mercy to every sinner, no matter the severity of their actions. Within that shower of mercy is an invitation to respond.

Today’s Solemnity – Desiring to give his Church a perpetual means of sharing in the saving work of his paschal mystery, the Lord instituted the Eucharist as the sacrament of his abiding presence. Today’s solemnity is a moment for the church to pause and give thanks for the immense treasure of the Lord’s self-giving of his Body and Blood on the cross, made present for us under sacramental signs.

World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests – June 27 – Catholics worldwide are urged to pray for Priests today on the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests.  The first reading, from the Book of Genesis, presents us with the mysterious king and priest, Melchizedek, king of Salem. While much has been written about this figure, scholars continue to study his origins and his significance. Melchizedek, who offers bread and wine to Abram and then blesses him in the name of God Most High, has come to be recognized as one who prefigures Christ.
While First Corinthians offers a succinct account of the celebration of the Eucharist in the early Church, the Gospel from Luke focuses attention on the multiplication of the five loaves and two fish. The Twelve are more than ready to dismiss the five thousand men (and most likely a great number of women and children) so that they and Jesus might have something to eat. After the Twelve follow Jesus’ orders to have the people sit in groups of fifty, Jesus takes the loaves and fish, looks heavenward, blesses the food, and has the disciples distribute the food. The entire crowd was satisfied, and an abundance of leftover food was collected. This Gospel reminds us that God nourishes us abundantly.

·         The use of specific numbers in the Gospel points to a heightened sense of holiness in this gathering – a holiness made possible, perhaps, by the crowd’s growing realization that only Jesus could satisfy their deepest hunger and by Jesus’ desire to do so. It is often in these moments of heightened awareness of our need for God, or closeness to others who are in great need, that we experience holiness.
  • Discipleship sometimes leads us into chaotic, unsettling, and overwhelming situations, not unlike the disciples’ discomfort at the crowds who gathered around Jesus. Instead of turning inward and clinging to our own desire for order and control over these circumstances, we can trust in the miraculous power of God to turn us toward others and nourish us in our moments of famishment.

Today’s Solemnity – Although God is one, God is not solitary. Each of the Divine Persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – is distinct from the others and exists eternally with them as a communion of persons in love. Baptized in the name of our Triune God, we are called to share in the divine life and to shape our families and our communities to reflect the unity and love found in the relationship among the Father, Son, and Spirit.

Today’s reading from the Book of Proverbs is a beautiful and somewhat mysterious passage in which we hear Wisdom speak of being with God at the beginning of creation. The passage is one of several texts from the Old Testament that personifies “wisdom.” Interestingly, the gender of wisdom is feminine. While a significant number of studies assert that wisdom may have represented a goddess in an early period, we know that in the Wisdom tradition of the Old Testament, “wisdom” and “folly” are often depicted as feminine figures. Since a portion of the Book of Proverbs is recognized as instruction for young men, these texts are often understood as representing the choice that must be made in life, a choice between wisdom or folly. In light of the New Testament, wisdom is associated with the Logos, the Word, who was with God in the beginning. Such an understanding is expressed most clearly in the Prologue of John’s Gospel.
While the selection from Romans emphasizes the gift of peace we have received through Jesus, the Gospel informs us that Jesus did not bring his disciples to full knowledge of who he was while he was among them. He did, however, tell them of the coming of the Spirit, a Spirit who would guide them in truth. It is the mystery of the Trinity that we ponder today.

·         There are some very common images and characteristics of God that most Catholics learn from an early age. The celebration of the Trinity can be an invitation to expand our imaginations around who God is and what God is like. The imagery of wisdom at the moment of creation playfully delighting in humanity is a good place to start.
  • The three persons of the Trinity are united in perfect harmony with one another. Through Jesus we are extended a generous invitation to enter fully into this relationship and to reflect that mutual love. Is our local faith community a reflection of Trinitarian harmony, generosity, and love? Do we extend the invitation to others, especially those who are most marginalized by the church and society?
  • Jesus refers frequently to his relationship with God as a father, and other Scripture texts represent God as mother, highlighting God’s parent-child nature. While not all adults are parents, there are a number of ways we serve as caregivers. Building healthy parent-child-type relationships is part of our nature as human beings created in God’s image, and the Holy Spirit can help lead us in the right direction.

Solemnity of Pentecost – Today is the Solemnity of Pentecost, when we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and their sharing of the Good News of Jesus Christ with the world. This day is acknowledged as the birth of the Church since it is the day when the frightened and confused disciples emerged from the upper room, boldly proclaiming the mighty acts of God through the crucified and risen Lord.

Scripture Insights – Solemnity of Pentecost
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2025: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2024, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 222.

This joyous Solemnity of Pentecost brings the Easter season to a conclusion. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that his Father will send them the Holy Spirit, and we witness this promise brought to fulfillment in the reading from Acts. How is this Spirit manifested in Acts? It is noisy, powerful, fiery, and enabling. Those who received the Spirit were able to speak in different languages. Thus, “devout Jews from every nation under heaven” (2:5) who were staying in Jerusalem were able to understand what was proclaimed to them. This event has sometimes been understood as a reversal of the event of the Tower of Babel, a time when people challenged God through their desire for power. As a result, God confused their language and scattered them over the earth.
The power of the first reading is reinforced in the refrain from the responsorial psalm: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” This hymn of praise recognizes God as creator of all and understands that without God’s breath of life, we perish.
Paul’s text from the Letter to the Romans also recognizes the power of God’s life-giving Spirit. Paul reminds us that if we embrace this Spirit, if the Spirit dwells within us, we are children of God and heirs with Christ. Accepting such a gift has consequences. Like Christ, we will suffer, but we will also be glorified with him.

·         Consider the amazing diversity of peoples from the Jewish diaspora who were witness to this first Pentecost. The miracle of them hearing in their native dialects is significant; the miracle could just as well have been that they all understood perfectly one universal language. The Church today is even wider in its diversity of cultures and languages, yet individual Churches are often more insulated than ever from those who are different from them. How can we as Church intentionally seek out or create spaces of cultural and linguistic diversity? How can we practice appreciation for the gifts that each culture and language bring to our liturgies and customs within the Church, as well as to other institutions in our society?
  • We may be disappointed for want of an impressive, majestic display of the Holy Spirit such as wind and tongues of fire in our own lives. Yet we are reassured that equally powerful are the quiet, unseen, mysterious movements of the Holy Spirit. Consider, for example, our prayer that the Holy Spirit descend “like the dewfall” upon the bread and wine at Mass. The dewfall appears gradually while we sleep, yet it leaves the scorched earth rejuvenated and refreshed.
  • The first Pentecost was not limited to the twelve apostles. Mary the Mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and other women were surely with them as well. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are showered on all the People of God.
