Jesus shows his wounds, and the disciples rejoice to see him. They see their Lord, yet there is something unworldly about him. The risen Jesus is the same – but different! He then associates them with his God-directed mission. Jesus is the sent one of God, and he now formally sends them as promised (13:20). Their commission is guaranteed by a creative act: Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, just as the Spirit hovered over creation. They now have two tasks: forgive the sins of any who seek and bring the ongoing presence of Christ into the world.
Then we learn Thomas was not with the disciples for this encounter, and he will not accept the word of the believing community unless he physically encounters the risen Jesus. Again on a Sunday they experience Jesus’ presence, but now Thomas is there. Jesus challenges Thomas to place his finger into his wounds, asking him to stop his unbelief and become a believer. In response, Thomas makes a confession that summarizes all that faith requires. Jesus, as risen Lord, is the revelation of the presence of God among humankind. Jesus further asserts that those who believe without seeing such signs are blessed, thereby summoning us all to faith.
John preliminarily concludes in hope that the signs and wonders he shared have affirmed our belief in Jesus as Christ and son of God. This is how we will find true life in this world. The Acts reading shows the first fruits of this new life.

  • Perhaps more than any other book in the Bible, Revelation hearkens to the past, present, and future simultaneously. It speaks to a specific historical moment and to Jesus’ once-and-for-all triumph over death, to the active presence of – and ongoing need for – God’s saving action in the world, and to a future when the kingdom of God will be fully realized.
·         The image of Divine Mercy gives us some idea of how the apostles might have seen Jesus appear in the Upper room, offering peace and asking for trust. Even before his crucifixion, Jesus’ ministry was one of mercy. How much more powerful is his call to mercy after having been victimized to the point of torture and a humiliating death.
·         The resurrected Jesus holds the keys to death and the netherworld. He offers freedom to those in the deepest depths of Satan’s grasp. In our world today, we are called to be instruments in making sure that Jesus’ compassion, love, mercy, and promise of salvation reach those caught up even in the darkest depths of evil.

John narrates Mary of Magdala’s coming to Jesus’ tomb on the week’s first day. Mary is alone and “it was still dark.” For John, darkness can indicate lack of faith, and that is the case with Mary. She will come into the light but has a journey to travel. Seeing the stone removed, she rushes to Simon Peter and the Beloved Disciple to report the tomb emptied. Where is the executed Jesus? We know that God is the one involved, but they must still catch on.
Peter and the Beloved Disciple run to the tomb. Peter leads, but the other disciple passes him, sees that the signs of death are absent, but relinquishes first entry. Peter has emerged as the leader, while the Beloved is the model disciple who both gives access and defers to his leader. We see the burial cloths rolled to one side, contrasting Jesus’ raising of Lazarus, who was still bound. This is distinctive. Following into the empty tomb, the Beloved Disciple sees further evidence of death overcome by God. The burial cloths are folded and lain at opposite ends of the tomb. He believes (Jn 20:8). Peter’s and Mary’s responses are not recorded; their faith journeys need more time.
The disciples return home, as yet unaware of the Scripture of Jesus’ resurrection. The Scripture is John’s Gospel, and we eventually learn that we are blessed to have it (20:30 – 31). They witnessed, but we are summoned to believe because of that witness, to believe without seeing. Paul summons us likewise in his letter to the Colossians, as does Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. To find our place, we must “seek what is above” (Col 3:1).

  • As the disciples – Mary of Magdala, then Simon Peter and another – observe the signs at the tomb, they begin to understand what has happened. Catholic teaching urges us to observe the world around us, the “signs of the times,” and interpret them according to the Gospel. Signs of the resurrection are all around us. Let us draw close to those excluded in the “tombs” of today and experience resurrection together.
·         The stone – Jesus – that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone of our faith. This is a living cornerstone, not one relegated to history. In what ways do we keep the living Jesus at the center of our faith life as individuals and as a community?

Scripture Insights – Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2025: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2024, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 150.

Paul’s Letter to the Philippians gave homage in the early Church to the Christ event. Paul describes Jesus as one in the form of God who humbled himself by taking on our form and going to a sacrificial death to exemplify the love God has for us. This early hymn shows how we recognize Jesus as Christ and Lord who brings God’s glory into our world.
Luke’s passion is shaped by tradition. The Passover preparations and meal are unique as Jesus instructs the disciples on the importance of service for the future mission. At the Mount of Olives, Jesus’ prayer is framed by warnings against temptation, and his arrest in betrayal and violence, even as Jesus heals the high priest’s injured slave. Peter’s later denials, where he fails to identify with Jesus when challenged, are told before the account of Jesus’ suffering. The assault during the arrest is met with healing, and Peter’s betrayal is met with forgiveness and repentance.
At the trial before the Sanhedrin, Jesus accepts that he is the Christ, the son of Man who will come as the final judge, and the Son of God. The Roman trial follows, set around a visit to Herod. Jesus emerges as king and is eventually handed over to death by Pilate who, nonetheless, declares him innocent. Finally, with words of compassion and warning, Luke describes Jesus’ road to the cross.
Jesus is crucified between criminals; he forgives his crucifiers, and he welcomes repentant sinners. While he commends his spirit into the Father’s hands, the Roman centurion announces what many have known all along: “This man was innocent beyond doubt.” All return home, beating their breasts in grief and ripe for repentance.

  • The people of Jerusalem greet Jesus with cries of “Hosana,” a word whose origin means “Save us,” yearning for freedom from the oppression of the Roman empire. With whom can we walk in solidarity this Holy Week, crying out on their behalf, “Hosanna, save us!”?
·         Unlike any other events in the history of the world, the various moments of Holy Week demonstrate just what God’s love is all about. In our lives we often try to box God in, making the love of God fit within our plans, our comfort zone, and our social circle. This week shows us that God is so much bigger, wider, and deeper than the limits we’ve created. How are we being invited this year as individuals and as a community to expand our faith?

Isaiah speaks of the power and sovereignty of God, who has a plan for creation and for each of us. The psalmist then promises that sadness will turn to joy and laughter if we stand strong. Paul, in his gentle Letter to the Philippians, further describes our faith lives as journeys pursuing maturity found in hope and satisfaction with God’s blessings in whatever form they take.
This teaching culminates in our Gospel: an encounter among Jesus, a woman caught in adultery, and those who test Jesus to her harm. This account is well known, but most early manuscripts do not include it. Remarkably, this powerful vignette was so loved that it nonetheless found a canonical home. Audiences of all time now experience this story of merciful wisdom and compassion.
Scribes and Pharisees bring a woman before Jesus as if to stand trial. They caught her in the very act of adultery, a crime punishable by stoning (Lv 20:10; Dt 22:22 – 24), and demand that Jesus render judgment – but John confirms that Jesus too is on trial. The disinterest in the woman’s partner shows that justice is of little concern. Jesus bends down and writes in the sand. He whose words have flowed freely now refuses to speak, perhaps indicating that they are asking the wrong question. Jesus then responds with his encouragement to the one among them without sin to throw the first stone, and then he returns to his writing. One by one, those gathered depart until even the young move away.
The woman stands alone before Jesus. He asserts her autonomy as one who makes her own decisions and has her own relationship with God, then he sends her away with the command to change her ways accordingly.

  • Archbishop St. Oscar Romero preached that “personal sin is at the base of the great social sin.” In Jesus’ encounter with the woman in today’s Gospel, he brings personal and social sin into dialogue. Violent punishment of “sinners” still happens today in the legal justice system, and we are each holding a stone. How can we build a society driven by mercy, accountability, and healing?
·         Even when we desire change, it is so easy to fall back on old habits and ways of doing things. Sometimes we can’t even imagine anything other than what has always been. God’s promise to make a new way inspires hope for both our ability to change as individuals and the possibilities for transforming society.
