Jesus’ parable is often called “The Prodigal Son,” but this misses its deeper meaning. If we portray it as the parable of the father with two sons, we see how it challenges us to love without limits.
The father, at his younger son’s request, sets him free so that he can make his own choices and bear their consequences. The son’s behest cannot be overstated. He has asked his father if they could pretend he is dead so that the son could take his share of the wealth. We see that the son quickly dissipates his father’s wealth and finds himself in the shocking reality of the unforgiving world. Coming to his senses, he intends to make amends and hope for mercy.
The father awaits his child’s return and welcomes him back into the household with great joy and celebration. If we end here, however, we miss the real point. This father risks losing his older son, the one who has remained faithful and true. One was lost and has been found, but as we close, the father is outside, away from the rejoicing, trying to save his second son, to whom he says, “Everything I have is yours” (Lk 15:31). Jesus points to a Father who makes demands of all who follow, but these must be understood in the light of a Father who is found in unexpected places, searching for all his lost children.
What is lost must be found. This message stands, and this is what Paul confirms in his Second Letter to the Corinthians. Jesus reveals a different God from the one expected and invented by the religious culture of his day. This expected image holds power today because we continue to look for God in the wrong places. The God revealed by Jesus is as much a surprise to us as to his listeners. We enthrone God on altars when he is likely to be found out in the dark, trying to save his lost children.

  • The Pharisees view certain types of people as unworthy to dine with Jesus. So many areas of our lives are governed by this type of thinking – deserving and undeserving, earned or unearned, able or unable to pay. How is the parable inviting us to transcend this paradigm of distinction and become a community of beloved brothers and sisters – in our ministries, parish, community and school organizations, governmental institutions and legal system?
·         Jesus’ listeners – and modern-day readers, as well – would have seen this parent’s actions as reckless and foolish. Dorothy Day invites us to consider another worldview: “We must love to the point of folly, and we are indeed fools, as our Lord himself was who died for such a one as this.”
·         God always provides – sometimes just enough for us to get by, and other times in abundance. As we were called to communal grieving at the beginning of Lent, so we are called to be a community of reconciliation.

Our Old Testament reading for today is well known to us – likely one we have heard since childhood. Moses, who is tending his father-in-law’s flock at the base of Mount Horeb, may be looking for distractions to while away the time when he sees a bush in flames just off the path. What is remarkable is not the burning bush itself but its staying power. The bush is not consumed. As many of us would, Moses decides to check it out.
Moses’ openness becomes God’s cue to call out to him, indeed, to summon him far beyond what he believes himself capable of. Notice that when God calls him by name, Moses responds simply, “Here I am.” In Hebrew, this is just one word, hinneni. It is how Abraham responded to God at the ultimate test of his faith (Gn 22) and how many prophets after him also will respond to their call. Once God alerts Moses to the holy ground and identifies himself in the covenantal tradition of Moses’ ancestors, Moses lowers his face in fear but remains. Much staying power will be required of him as well in the coming years.
God then reveals his intentions to bring the Israelites out of oppression in Egypt into this very wilderness where they will worship God in freedom. Moses is God’s chosen prophet and leader. This scene culminates when, at Moses’ request, God further reveals the divine name, YHWH, a form of the verb “to be.” God is the essence of being, the “I AM,” a name so sacred that it should not be uttered. Our reverence is indicated in the address, “Lord.”

  • We all, at times, experience the temptation to observe tragic events from afar and point fingers at who is to blame – sometimes even blaming victims for their misfortune. In these moments, our response must include a look inward to recognize our own vulnerabilities and culpability. Like Moses, we must notice God’s presence, approach with humility, and discern our own call to action.
·         The gardener is determined to offer every possible form of support to nurture the fig tree. Parents, teachers, and other mentors may experience a parallel in nurturing children and youth. As Jesus never tires of reaching out to us in creative and surprising ways, we can feel affirmed in the effort to meet each child where they are.

This week’s readings include Luke’s narration of the transfiguration of Jesus into his full glory. As breathtaking as this episode is, the verse that I find most striking in today’s readings contains Paul’s description of those he calls “enemies of the cross of Christ” (Phil 3:18). In the Letter to the Philippians, he claims, “Their God is their stomach” (3:19). Is there a more poignant way of illustrating the insatiability of greed in many parts of the Western twenty-first-century world? Paul urges the Philippians and us to seek our identity and destination in Christ. The apostle calls us to live like Jesus, a model of simplicity and generosity (the opposite of greed) for which he himself strives.
Luke’s Gospel blesses us with Peter, James, and John’s glimpse of the true nature of Jesus, the Christ and Son of God. He clarifies, however, that this is not where we remain. Truth may be revealed to us on the mountain, but we cannot stay there. Our vocation is with our people – humankind – who need us as we need each other. Our call is to “listen to him” (9:36) and bring this revelatory truth into the grass roots. We need the glory of God in Christ, and the Triune God asks that we listen to the One who appeared in glory.
The faithful beauty of this summons is grounded in God’s call of Abraham, our father and model of faith, to covenant relationship. We must be open to God’s plan for us at every moment of our lives. Abraham was called to leave all he knew to follow God. The generational benefits of that new relationship are only beginning to be manifested.

  • Each of us has “wow” moments like the transfiguration – and they can be really powerful touchpoints to help ground us, but we also can’t rely on those moments to sustain us forever. It takes continuous effort and intentionality. But we can lean on memories as touchpoints when we persevere through more difficult times.
·         Peter responds to this surreal moment by leaning back on familiar actions, not yet realizing the new covenant, the new way of being in relationship with God, that Jesus represented. When God invites us, personally and as a community, to a deeper connection, do we turn back to the familiar, or embrace something new? If the Lord is our light and our salvation, why should we be afraid?
  • One of the shifts that Jesus brought about was to shatter the clear, bold line between holy and unholy. In Jesus we realize that to be human is to be holy. To care for the human needs in ourselves and in our neighbor is to build the kingdom of heaven.

Today’s readings remind us of who we are and from where we came. We are the people of God, and we are called always to live as such, even when the evidence from our current social, political, and economic situations would suggest otherwise. God, we are reminded, knows his people, remembers his people, and has a plan for our salvation. Most important, all of this may well be beyond our ken. And that should rather comfort us, not dissuade or create anxiety in us.
Luke’s Gospel narrates his understanding of Jesus’ temptations prior to his public ministry. Jesus refuses the easy route; rather, he lets go and trusts in God. Notice that he falls back on his traditional grounding in response. This doesn’t mean he is unthinking. He reflects, he discerns, and he asks what would God have him do.

  • Moses’ instructions include a retelling of the Israelites’ collective history of suffering and deliverance. Lent can be a time to retell stories of past hardships and acknowledge God’s presence with us through them. While we can be tempted to leave painful memories or events in the past, every time we recall or talk about these events in a safe place, it leads to greater healing.
·         Jesus relies on short Scripture verses to get him through moments of temptation. Memorizing short, key Scripture verses and repeating them to ourselves can become a tool to guide our actions when we lose our patience, feel hopeless, or make decisions. Is there a Scripture verse you could memorize to become a mantra for you this Lent?
·         Power is a theme today – a power that liberates, a power that provides, a power that hears the cry of the oppressed, a power that rejects opportunities for abuse. How do each of us wield our individual power within our families, neighborhoods, country and world? What do we look for when choosing leaders?
