The Pope’s Prayer Intention for March – For families in crisis  – Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure for their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences.

Season of Lent – Lent is the yearly celebration by the church of its corporate conversion in Jesus Christ. During Lent, the liturgy prepares catechumens to celebrate the Paschal Mystery by the various stages of Christian Initiation. It also prepares the faithful for Easter as they recall their Baptism and do penance in preparation for the greatest Feast of the year.
Lent has two major purposes: It recalls or prepares for Baptism, and emphasizes a spirit of penance. Through forty days of closer attention to God’s Word and of more fervent prayer, believers are prepared to celebrate the Paschal Mystery. Lenten instructions stress these baptismal and penitential themes.
During Lent, it is important to teach the social consequences of sin as well as the fact that the heart of the virtue of penance is hatred of sin as an offence against God. The church encourages penitential practices that are external and social, reflecting the circumstances of individuals and communities, as we pray and so penance for sinners.

World Day of Prayer – March 7 – The World Day of Prayer is observed annually on the first Friday in March. It is an invitation for Christians to pause and pray together ecumenically. This recalls our Christian            responsibility to be sensitive to the signs of the times so that we might bring a more authentically Christian dimension to the concerns of our world, our country, our community. Sponsored by the Women’s Inter-church Council of Canada and its national counterparts around the world, it is celebrated in approximately 165 countries.

The passage from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians contains the heart of today’s readings. Across the fifteenth chapter of this letter, Paul teaches the Gospel he has received (I Cor 15:3), which leads him to take on the challenge that death poses to this good news. The one living by faith is invulnerable to the power of death. He asks, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (15:55). He answers that it is found only in sin, for which Christ has atoned. Paul is, therefore, uncompromising that, through God’s plan, Jesus Christ has taken on death and beaten it. Christ’s work is not the end of the plan. Paul instructs that we are continuously to take part in the relationship with God, “always fully devoted to the work of the Lord” (15:58).
Today’s Gospel reading is from Luke’s narration of Jesus’ sermon on the plain and reads a lot like Jewish wisdom literature. Jesus presents a series of pithy remarks on practical ways to participate in the work of the Lord. From these teachings, we question whether the blind (read: uninformed) can lead others, and we are challenged to self-reflection and discernment before we call out others’ weaknesses. Jesus also assures us that fullness of heart must be the locus of our treatment of others. Jesus calls on his Jewish scriptural tradition for such teachings, and the verses from Sirach punctuate this wisdom. In the biblical tradition, there is no more powerful challenge to think before speaking. Our speech, says Sirach, is the primary testament to our integrity and concern for justice.

  • It’s a common rule of etiquette never to talk about religion or politics, especially in mixed company. Yet our growth in wisdom will be greater when we learn to listen to those who disagree with us. Our churches can promote safe spaces to talk about difficult topics. In this way, when we go out into the world, the fruit of the tree will show the care that it’s had.
·         There are plenty of healthy sources of spiritual, intellectual, and emotional nourishment out there – and just as many toxic sources. From the news and entertainment we consume to the people with whom we spend our time, we are shaping our hearts. It is a timely moment on the verge of Lent to evaluate how we are nourishing ourselves and what fruits we are producing.

Today’s readings are, on the one hand, about the faithfulness and mercy of God and, on the other, about sin, atonement, and human interactivity. Throughout history, God has consistently shown compassionate understanding as a model Father to his children. The key here is the familial relationship that endures highs and lows, rights and wrongs. The biblical writings consistently characterize this relationship as one of covenant, a dynamic commitment of promises and obligations that, if allowed to do so, can grow and develop over time into an eternal union.
David shows his trust in God to thwart his opponents and to invoke justice. This trust brings about God’s plan for David and all God’s people. Jesus illustrates such trust in God as he summons us to “do to others as you would have them do to you” (Lk 6:31) despite what they may actually do. Jesus is not calling us to be doormats trodden upon by all who might take advantage. By contrast, if we find our center and fundamental value in God and our creation in God’s image and likeness, such pain can be properly situated. Our true selves will not be altered or hurt by it. We can make decisions, holding ourselves and others accountable and doing the right thing, all while remaining in right relationship with God through Christ and refusing vengeance or petty grievance.
Paul reflects theologically on this call to covenant relationship and just action. He articulates God’s plan as it has been from the beginning. Humankind is composed of both nature and spirit. Paul challenges us to live the natural into the spiritual, to rise above the fray and be who God truly calls us to be.

  • When standing face-to-face with someone who has wronged us, we often struggle to recognize and process our emotions – anger, disappointment, sadness – so they come out through words and actions that cause additional harm. What does it take to respond as David did and how Jesus is inviting us to? One way is to proactively invite the Holy Spirit, the breath of God, into those moments through our breathing.
·         Many times we rejoice at the punishment of those who have committed crimes by supporting inhumane conditions, disproportionate sentences, and even the death penalty. Our faith gives us a strong foundation to seek justice differently: through healing, accountability, and transformation of the conditions that contribute to crime.

Scripture Insights – Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This Sunday’s Old Testament readings present a strong – even harsh – contrast between putting our trust in God and in other people. Neither the prophet nor the psalmist, however, intends that we not seek relationship with those around us. At stake here are how we ground ourselves, understand our value, and find our truth. If we look to God, in whose image and likeness we are made, for our authority and authenticity, we will be able to turn outward in solidarity with others.
Luke’s Gospel presents Jesus’ teaching on the kingdom of God. What we find across these “blessings” and “woes” are reversals that challenge what society often dictates to be status or success. By contrast, Jesus teaches that those who live in humility and find their authentic selves in this life apart from social conventions – namely, in right relationship with God and others – will know true union with God, both in this life and in the next. The opposite, of course, is also true. If we seek affirmation and authenticity only in fleeting desires and satisfactions, we will have little foundation on which to stand in relationship to God.
Paul takes the next step by teaching that, on our behalf, Christ took on death and beat it. Further, this victory is only the firstfruits. Just as Christ died and was resurrected to eternal union with God, so shall all those who “belong” to Christ. Our hope must lie here. We are to live as if God is our king, and this process of believing and acting will bring about that kingdom. This, in turn, prepares the way for the eternal kingdom and living eternally in union with our Creator.

  • We have felt God’s call but continue to doubt: Could I really be the best person for the job? Let us recall our response when God invites us to behold the Eucharist, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” Let us feel assured that when we turn our eyes toward God, we see not judgment but only love.
·         God calls us to create safe spaces for ourselves and also to connect with others who are different in religion, race, age, language, or culture; to explore and revere unfamiliar neighborhoods, cities, or countries; to open our eyes, ears, and hearts to God’s presence there; and to welcome their presence in our Church.

Today’s readings are crucial for understanding the good news of the Christ event. We begin with Isaiah’s vision of God’s throne room that results in his call to be God’s spokesperson. We move to the psalmist’s unwavering faith in God who protects him even when he speaks uncomfortable truth to power. This leads to Luke’s narration of the call of the first disciples and Paul’s primal creed of the good news.
Unlike our disinclined Jeremiah from last week, Isaiah calls out, “Here I am … send me!” (Is 6:8). He becomes the model for future prophets and disciples. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, is teaching by the sea and revealing the Word of God. In the midst of manifesting God’s prophetic activity, he encounters those who will be his disciples. Simon Peter, James, and John all enter into relationship with Jesus based on his word and deed. They eventually become prophets and apostles in their own rights, but now they are just beginning.

  • We have felt God’s call but continue to doubt: Could I really be the best person for the job?
