Through his compassionate identification with our human state, he “willed to wash away the sins of the world” (prayer over the offerings). At our own baptism we are joined to Christ, cleansed from sin, receive the Spirit, and are proclaimed God’s adopted sons and daughters. Today we find that John’s ministry has brought many to him and spread an eager hopefulness that he is the long-awaited Messiah. John, however, is clear about his role and baptizing ministry as leading people to repentance to prepare the way for the one to come. He presents himself as the Isaian voice crying out in the wilderness proclaiming forgiveness, mercy, and the coming revelation of the glory of God. In Isaiah’s original context, the prophet proclaims the Word of God as the hope for return from exile and restoration of God’s people to their land and union with God. The evangelists re-envision this hope in the person of John the Baptist, who prepares the people for restoration and reunion with God through the coming Messiah. John’s baptism of Jesus inaugurates the revelation of the glory of God as the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus, who is affirmed as Son.

About Today’s Solemnity – The celebration of the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord reveals to us the beautiful truth that the salvation offered by Christ is for all peoples. The journey and presence of the Magi show us that anyone who seeks Jesus with a sincere heart is acceptable to God. As his disciples, we are called to confess our faith in Christ and to make his message of salvation resound throughout the earth. Taken from 2025 Source Book page 48 Scripture Insights – Epiphany of the Lord Taken from Source Book for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays 2025: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, LTP Liturgy Training Publications Copyright 2024, 3949 South Racine Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609, pg. 48. The prophet Isaiah proclaims the light shining in the darkness of the world. Regardless of the dark challenges presented by life in this world, the radiance of God permeates all corners. The psalmist grounds this symbolic vision in the reality of the just and peaceful rule of God’s Anointed One in history. Matthew’s Gospel tells of the Christ child, born in Bethlehem in the time of King Herod, who had a death wish for all potential claimants to his status and throne. After the Gentile wise men are profoundly affected by their encounter with the Christ child and his family, they make their own way in the world, defying the powers that be. The Magi exemplify how God might call us to live his plan in this world despite our best-laid plans. Further, we all have leading roles in our own stories, but we never know when we might be significant supporting actors in the lives of others.
· We know gifts do not represent the essence of Christmas, and we may be feeling overwhelmed at the close of the consumerist season. Yet the Magi also affirm gifts as a meaningful way to show honor and love. How can our reflections from this Christmas season inspire the way we give gifts in this new year? |
